Ambitious (continued)

from West Ham Utd coaches in the football and the England Netball Development Officers in netball to prepare them for a gruelling tournament in the sun. Temperature soared throughout the tournament and the students did not disappoint.

The girls finished 10th overall.

The under 15s boys football team lost their talismanic goalkeeper Sam Pym in the opening game which meant, Josh Hubbart had to step in. After a reshuffle in the formation the boys battled hard finally qualifying for the plate competition for day two. Nick Taylor commanded the midfield and whilst Joe Hubbart ran all day as the sole striker. Day two saw similar results with the Brandon Timms commanding the defence. The boys were now settled in their formation and played competitive football, finally finishing 6th in the plate competition.

Matravers were one of the only schools to be represented by two teams under 15 netball tournament, the girls battled through two tough groups to reach the plate competition. The girls seemed tired from a long journey and it wasn’t until day two that we started to see them play their normal game. The B team captained by Lola Waldron, proved difficult to beat on day two, with Jayah Dowling a commanding presence in a variety of positions. The A team captained by Emma Price proved a tough team to beat on day two, coming through unbeaten to win the Plate competition. Jodi Gunning was unwavering in attack as she kept the scoreboard ticking over and Ellie Johnson was as energetic as ever playing Centre.

Following two days of tough competition, the group then had two days of relaxing and site seeing before embarking on another 24 hours of travelling. Firstly, the group travelled to Barcelona for a tour of the Camp Nou, home of Barcelona Football Club. The students and staff were in ore of the history and prestige of the legendary club. Folloing the tour the coach drivers gave us a guided tour of the city, passing the Olympic Stadium and Palace, before spending some time shopping at Les Rambles.

On the final day the group spent the day at the Water Park, to cool off and for one last day in the sun. The different slides and wave pools allowed the group to relax before heading home. Unfortunately a few delays and traffic meant getting home took a bit longer than expected however this did not distract from a great trip and experience for both staff and students.

The under 13 girls netball team found the tournament fast and furious, with many games early in the morning. The girls had the toughest group, with the competition over two days with everybody playing each other. The girls never lost their enthusiasm and they performed well under pressure, many of the girls representing the school for the first time in netball. Evie Hale demonstrated her athleticism by playing in different position with Courtneigh Meadows leading by example.
