HAPPY MATRAVERS SCHOOL SKI TOUR 2019
There’s nothing quite like arriving a resort covered in fresh snow! Saalbach Hinterglem did not disappoint! Initially we had two days of perfect skiing/sunbathing and a further 5 days of conditions with challenging variability, but excellent snow! The staff and instructors were amazed at the resilience and ambition our students showed over the week, with the final couple of days seeing even the first time skiers able to conquer runs up to red difficulty (FYI, that’s great!).
GEOLOGY
Deeply embedded in the Matravers calendar is our annual trip to Lulworth Cove! The Year 11 GCSE students spent the day applying their skills of fossil and rock identification amount others to establish the geological history of the cove. The expert group were challenged to explain how the rock types show the UKs change in latitude over time, relative sea level change and why bays develop over thousands of years into the shape they are.
Not only were our students successful in the physical side of the tour and their impeccable behaviour, their courtesy won the hearts of the instructors, who have already requested us for next year, and the coach company who specifically asked to take us for the third year in a row! We could not be prouder of the team! This year saw one of strongest turn outs for fancy dress, ranging from the staff 6 Nations to Year 9 boys super heroes!
This year we used our 6th Form Geology students to trial a new excursion to the Brecon Beacons national park, where we observed first had the dramatic landscape left behind following the more recent glacial maximum around 18,000 years ago. The students were also treated to a visit to Big Pit, a disused coal mine turned to a museum. We were able to travel down a 250 foot lift to see one of old seams and witness first- hand the working conditions and dangers coal miners were exposed to.
To those students leaving us to go on and study Earth Sciences further we wish you good luck and if you’re interested you can watch the MAPS: Black Sea documentary on More 4 TV, which 3 of our students were part of.
We can’t wait for next year, we’re returning to Saalbach Hinterglem in the year it hosts the world cup for skiing! If you wish to join the 2020 tour please contact the finance office to see if there are any spaces available. For more photos and news follow us on Twitter @ skimatravers.
Matravers Ski Team
Finally, the Geology department is saying farewell to Miss Ross. Over recent years she has inspired many students to study Geology and organised a number of trips, including the epic adventure to Iceland! We wish her all the best for the future and hope she continues to encourage students into the subject.
