Year 9 (continued) AREA ATHLETICS

Earlier this term we took a talented group of young individuals to Bath University to compete using their Athletic facilities. It was a great opportunity for young aspiring athletes to look at and use the full size and International standard equipment. Although the whole year team were represented extremely well special mentions go to the following individuals for a top 3 finish. Jack Rainbow Third 200m, Cody Joyce Third Javelin, Cameron Williams Third High Jump, Todd Pearce Third Javelin and Lilly Sperring Third High Jump.

“I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you to your good self and your Colleagues for making me feel so welcome the other day.

Also I wanted to highlight just how good your students were. I spent my last 12 years in the Army doing

Recruitment, visiting Schools, Colleges and Universities, covering both STEM and leadership. The last 2 years since leaving the Army I carried out STEM for The

Smallpiece Trust and during all that time your students have been the most polite, enthusiastic and well behaved students I’ve ever encountered, they are a credit to you and your School.”

Feedback from Fred Boucher from The Smallpiece trust- who ran the Year 9 STEM day

YEAR 9 CAREERS AT MATRAVERS SCHOOL

With the Year 9 options process complete, Year 9 have been taking part in employer visits and workshops focusing on

STEM subjects. This began with a National Grid STEM day on the 2nd July which involved 60 year 9 students managing their own project and developing it from the design stage all the way through to the construction stage.

Students developed their problem solving skills, leadership skills and team work skills through this project.

Following on from this, 30 year 9 students then visited MG Cannon, our Enterprise Advisor link, to find out about the world of work. This enabled them not only to find out more about MG Cannon as a company but also the vast range of different careers/jobs available within the company and what these entail.

“Throughout the day we were educated about types of engineers and how to apply normal skills into a career. It was an educational yet fun day and was displayed in a manner that was easy to understand. Every group was successful and so many more skills were shown to inspire teenagers like ourselves. I personally found the day amazing and the creations worked well thanks to Smallpiece.”

Caitlin Slark

“I enjoyed being able to learn more about engineering (pumps, switches and careers). Today was really fun!”

Ben Finbow “I really enjoyed this STEM day because of the

interesting tasks and events involved in the day. It really helped with improving different skills and learning to work and present in a team. I believe it was a great opportunity to be involved in.”

Ellie Hudd

“I found today really enjoyable and I felt it was a fun experience. I think the STEM day helped build confidence because of the presentation and it
