YEAR 11
So after joining the school at the same time in 2014, I have said a fond farewell to our Year 11 leavers. After many weeks of hard work and exams the time has come for them to leave us, have a well-earned break and move on to pastures new (or not so new for those returning to 6th Form!). Our leavers were sent off in true Matravers style, many with their new hoodies, and all with their newly signed shirts, some of which were very artistic!
The leavers’ assembly was an emotional, yet funny trip down memory lane. Many were embarrassed by their photos from back in Year 7 featured in their tutor group presentations on the big screen, highlighting how much they have changed in the last five years. We began the year at Cumberwell Park, with a meal and a few words to set the tone we needed to get through what were to be a tough few months. In no time at all we were back for Prom, on the same day as Leavers’ Assembly. It was a bigger success and more fun than I could have hoped for. They arrived in style, dined with decorum and danced the night away. Liarna’s funky moves and Joe’s party starting were the highlights of my evening.
It has been a tough, yet extremely rewarding year to see the students put so much effort into achieving success. From their Mock Conference in January, I could see many were on the way to achieving the

best they could. Our target board showed those who needed to put more in to their studying and this visual reminder of where they were really helped a lot of them get to where they needed to be. The theme of the year has been about ‘marginal gains’ and right up to the end assemblies and tutor times gave them lots of opportunities to improve in lots of small ways. Your support, as ever has been key in getting them through and I appreciate your effort in having those tough conversations with sometimes unwilling children. They’ll appreciate it on results day, of course. I look forward to seeing them on 22nd August to collect their results and reap the reward of their effort. Ahead of that, many of them have 4 weeks with the National Citizen Service to keep them occupied and some are still showing amazing and continuing commitment to our Cadets.
May I take this opportunity to thank Year 11 for the hard work, dedication and commitment you have shown and wish you all the very best of luck and success for the future. As the first year group I have ever taken all the way through, I’ll carry some great memories. It’s been a privilege to serve you as your Progress Leader. I look forward to welcoming a lot of you back into our 6th Form next year.
