Sixth Form (continued)

MATRAVERS SIXTH FORMERS CONTINUE THE TRADITION OF WORKING WITH BARNARDO’S

Term 5 and 6 have focused on preparing students for post 18 education and training with a range of workshops focusing on Apprenticeships, University and UCAS applications as well as how to get the most out of work experience placements. This began with ASK Apprenticeship running a group workshop supporting Year 12 and Year 13 students on finding and applying for apprenticeships.

Congratulations to sixth formers Lily Beckett and Tia Fear who have recently been offered jobs as playworkers with the Barnardo’s Short Breaks Activity Scheme. The clubs are run for children between the ages of eight and eighteen all of whom have a disability. Lily and Tia travelled to Chippenham for their interviews and both girls were delighted to be offered jobs. The interview procedure can be tough but some of the children have quite complex needs, and Barnardo’s have to be sure they get the right staff to work with them. It is a big commitment but at the same time it is very rewarding and one we are sure both the girls will enjoy.

Tia was delighted and said ‘When Banardoes contacted me to inform me that had been successful in achieving the Play worker role, I can honestly say that I cried. I was overcome with emotion, as I had just been given an amazing opportunity’ Knowing that I am a part of the Banardos team, makes me so proud, and adds an extra little spring to my step’.

Year 12 students then attended 2 workshops provided by Bath Spa University and Careerpilot focusing on the UCAS university process and how work experience can be beneficial with applications. All year 12 students have attended work experience placements from the 8th July and then presented to a small panel at the bigger interview day how these placements have supported their next steps decisions.

Lily and Tia are following in the footsteps of a number of former Matravers sixth formers. Ex head boy, Shane Roy, Rhiannon Dally, and Linda Harbour were the first Matravers students to be employed by Barnardo’s Short Breaks back in 2013. Abbie Brewer started in 2015, Hannah Delana in 2016 while Connie Brown and Hannah Aldous joined the team in 2017. All of these students worked throughout their two years in the sixth form and many of them are still working with us during their college and university breaks. These young people have become valuable and very popular members of the team.

Shane Roy, who is studying Medicine at Exeter University, says ‘I can’t wait to see everyone again over the summer’ and Abbie Brewer feels that ‘Working for Barnardo’s is an extremely rewarding job. I always go home with a smile on my face, no matter how tough the day has been, as I know I have made a difference’.

Rhiannon Dally, who studied Early Years Education at Bath Spa and is starting her first teaching job in a primary school in Trowbridge says that ‘Working for Barnardo’s is a whole new experience and one that you instantly love. You get such a rewarding feeling and have fun during your time there. The staff are all welcoming and so friendly and everyone is there to support each other no matter what the situation.’ These sentiments are echoed by Connie Brown who simply says ‘Lovely atmosphere, amazing people and just the best opportunities’.

Everyone at Matravers wish Lily and Tia all the best in their new roles and hope they thoroughly enjoy their time with Barnardos.
