Ambitious (continued) PRIMARY OUTREACH
As I write this, I am preparing for the next Year 5 Taster day. Last year it was an amazing day and a privilege to host all the Year 5 students from our feeder schools.
This year is looking like it will be bigger and better than last year. We have added History and Media to the list of subjects on offer and we will be hosting more Primary Children than last year. Look out for an article about the event in our December newsletter.
It has been an exciting year for Primary Outreach and Engagement, with lots of fantastic events taking place.
Firstly, we have successfully run our Stretch and Challenge programme for the second year running. Year 5 students from Bratton, Westbury Juniors, Westbury Leigh, Bithambrook and Keevil have taken part in the programme. These students took part in a series of workshops that gave them the chance to experience secondary school style lessons and enabled them to be challenged in a way they might not experience at Primary School. The workshops this year were had Geology, Literacy, Maths, Science, I.T , Food and French.
We were also lucky to have a workshop delivered by Dr Riding. This focused on our Core Value of Resilience. He took the students through what it means to be resilient and ways of coping in situations where resilience is needed. He then taught them all about a healthy body and a healthy mind and finished the session with some yoga.
students through their paces, army style. Students got to hold our paint ball guns, put on camo paint and eat some rations. Lots of fun.
Finally, the Performing Arts department delivered a series of workshops that culminated in a short performance from the students. It was all based around the exam piece that Year 7’s perform, which is a modern day Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students then used the script to create a piece of drum music, which they then performed a dance to. It was amazing to see the high level of creativity and engagement from the students and the performance workshops were enjoyed by the staff, parents and teachers. The students also got to take home C.D of the music they had created.
These workshops have provided a unique opportunity for Year 5 students in Westbury and the surrounding area. If you have son or daughter who will be in Year 5 next year, then you can sign them up now for the Cadets or the Performing Arts sessions. Please send an e-mail to
