to Chloe Kinder in year 12 for her excellent GCSE PE grade in 2018. Chloe achieved one of the highest grades nationally in Paper 1 of the course which secured her an 8 overall for the course.
2018/19 provided us with so many highlights that the department are already looking forward to 2019/20.
AREA ATHLETICS 2019
A team of 58 athletes and 20 helpers participated in the West Wiltshire Athletic Championships held at Bath University on the 19th June 2019. Despite the adverse weather in the days, leading up to the event Matravers students competed hard against the best athletes in the area determined to beat their rivals. Throughout the day students motivated and supported each other with the majority smashing personal bests or enjoying the competitive atmosphere of their first competition for the school.
Year 7 had some great results competing in their first of many athletics events for Matravers. Harry Winchester narrowly finished 2nd in the 100m after winning the County Championships the week before. Harry also won the 200m at area athletics in a time of 28.03s and finishing 3rd in the long jump, jumping 3m 99cm. Joe Devine also did well in the field, throwing 7 metres in the shot put and finishing 3rd. The year 7 boys relay team finished 3rd in the 4x100m relay in time of 59.56s. The year 7 girl’s competition was also fiercely competitive with Olivia Minty winning the javelin competition a week after finishing 3rd at the County Championships.
finishing with two podium places, Jack Rainbow finishing 3rd in the 200m and Todd Pearce finishing 3rd for the second year running in the javelin. The year 9 girls also did well in the field with Lily Sperring and Cody Joyce finishing 3rd in the high jump and javelin. The year 10 boys and girls had some of the toughest competition throughout the day as they competed against year 10 and 11 students from the other schools. Mackenzie Marshman finished 3rd in both the 800m and the discus. Leon Hobbs jumped superbly in the high jump, eventually finishing 2nd with a jump of 1m 60cm, which is only 5cm from the Matravers High Jump record. The year 10 girls competed really well considering their team was hit by a number of injuries prior to the competition. Sammie Kirk continued with her county triple jump form to finish 2nd with a jump of 8m 48cm whilst Rachel Godden finished 3rd in the 800m.
A special thank you to the helpers in year 10 and 12 that attended to support the field events as scorers or results runners. As the organisers this year the PE department could not have run the event without your help.

YEAR 8 ROUNDERS
The year 8 boys did well in the field events picking up two podium places in the high jump and javelin. Kian Ashman cleared 1m 40cm in the high jump to take joint 2nd place in the high jump whilst Joe Savage finished 3rd in the javelin with a throw of 21m 46cm. The year 8 girls performed well on both the track and in the field. Lily Morris was the standout performer of the day, stepping into to the 200m and winning in a time of 28.97 and nearly breaking the West Wilts record. The year 8 girls continued their impressive track competition to finish 3rd in the 4x100m relay. In the field both Jayah Dowling and Ruby Ladd secured more success. Jayah finished 2nd in the discus and Ruby 3rd in the javelin.

The Year 8 Rounders team, consisting of Grace O’Connor, Lily Morris, Ruby Ladd, Lucie May Brown, Lilly Dimambro, Tegan Marks and newcomers Mia Dykes- Brown & Ellie May Smith travelled to Melksham Oak School on 4th July to take part in the rounders tournament. Despite never having played as a team before, the girls put on some great performances. The girls narrowly lost their first match by 1 rounder however this only motivated them more as they went on to win their next match by 3 rounders. Captain Grace O’Connor continued to bowl superbly, very rarely giving away any rounders. Lily Morris, Ruby Ladd & Lilly Dimambro all successfully caught a number of players out and the team played like they had been played for years! Unfortunately the girls lost their third match, again only by a narrow margin of one rounder. In their final game they managed to pull it off and come away with a win. After winning two games and narrowly losing two games, the girls came in second place overall - a fantastic achievement for a new team. I really hope all the girls enjoyed the tournament and I look forward to seeing them at training next year!
