Sixth Form (continued)
Talking of brilliant young people, we have recently run the recruitment process for the new Senior Student Team. Nearly a dozen brave Year 12s voluntarily put themselves forward to undergo a nerve-racking and intensive interview with Dr Riding, Mr Clark and myself, in which they were asked to explain in more detail the ideas they shared on their application forms. As happens every year, we were blown away by the maturity these young people demonstrated. At the end of the process we were faced with the incredibly tough decision as to who to appoint to the two top roles, and as an equal opportunities employer, we took the decision that the two best candidates deserved these positions. So we are proud to announce that Daisy Veall and Chloe Kinder were appointed as our Head Students this year. They will meet with Dr Riding on a weekly basis and will oversee the Student Council, with the other senior student applicants being given roles working with specific year groups.
We have Freshers’ Week for the new Year 12s coming up from the 9 July, which will allow all students to try out the Sixth Form for a number of days and to start to get a better understanding of the demands of the subjects they have opted for. I would just like to remind all applicants that senior members of staff will be on hand on GCSE Results Day (22 August) to help with any questions about results and access to Sixth Form courses. We will be holding enrolment meetings with all applicants in the week following GCSE results. If there are any Year 11 students who are still unsure about what to do next year I would encourage you to come to talk to the Sixth Form team to see if there is anything we can offer you.

SOCIAL SCIENCES
We have had great success in the Social Science department this year.
The Sociology class have successfully completed all of the first year topics and are beginning to complete Year 13 content. Throughout the year, there has been hard work from Tia Fear and Charlotte Winchester as well as some impressive grades from Lily Beckett and Chloe Kinder. Students in this class are looking forward to getting their teeth into the next module on criminal and deviant behaviour in society.
The Philosophy and Ethics class have been hard at work this year and have completed both Philosophy and Ethics modules with great success. They are now beginning the Developments in Christian Thought content. The first topic on St Augustine has very interestingly led to some hard and challenging discussions on human nature. Jacob Bleackley and Charlotte Winchester have worked hard to develop their powers of analysis and evaluation when building an argument. These skills have helped to improve their essay writing whilst also improving debating
in class.
Year 12 Psychology students have managed to complete all the first year content with ease. Some excellent examples of work coming from Sophie Smith and Amelia Baker. This class is due to start the psychology research project before the end of term to put their new psychological knowledge into practical use. Year 13 Psychology students have completed their final exams and are feeling positive going on their next steps. Some students are even choosing to continue their social studies at university in specialisms like Criminology, Animal Psychology and Education. Wishing the leavers all the best!
This year in GCSE Religious Studies students have worked hard to complete modules on Christianity and Islam. Students have just finished learning about Ramadan and have been trying to empathise with some of the challenges that fasting at school brings. Many members of this class speak very passionately about modern issues and are therefore very excited to start the new ethics topics in Year 11. Rachel Godden and Marcus Ball have worked tirelessly throughout the year to improve their RS grades and it is paying off.
Keep up the good work!
READING BUDDY SCHEME FOR YEAR 7 STUDENTS
Reading Buddies is a scheme which has been set up by Inclusion to support year 7 students with their reading. Sixteen sixth formers kindly volunteered to become reading buddies this year and they have proved to be an exceptional group of young people. Every Wednesday they have the room set up early and are organised and ready to start before their year 7 readers turn up. They have created a really positive atmosphere for the younger students to learn in and this is a reflection of the commitment and effort these sixth formers are putting in to the scheme.
Tia Fear, 6.1, comments ‘Every week, seeing the young students faces brighten up when they leave the reading buddies group is one of the main things that brings me joy. It is so great to see the impact a small project like this can have on a young person and I am honoured to be a part of it’.
The year 7 students enjoy reading buddies and when asked to make a comment for the newsletter ‘fun’ was still the word that came up the most often.
Jacob said, “Reading Buddies has helped me to read better.”
Lilly-May said, “We have some fun times.”
Chloe said, “I’ve enjoyed Reading Buddies; it has helped me to read out loud.”
Well done to all the year 7s and to Xenia and a big thank you to all the sixth formers!
