DofE PRACTICE EXPEDITION 28TH – 29TH SEPTEMBER

To make the most of the academic year, we launched into a practice Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition in the Mendip Hills. Our new Bronze award participants were undertaking training, covering a range of expedition and navigation skills, including cooking in the field, rucksack packing and tent pitching.

The cadets were extremely lucky with the weather over the weekend, consistent sunshine and clear skies really allowed them to be familiar with applying their map to the ground and develop good orientation skills.

The cadets were directly supervised during the first day of training to support their decision making and receive extra support as it can be quite daunting being given a map and compass and told to “go on”. Whilst under supervision the cadets were encouraged to use a range of navigational techniques such as handrailing and tick points, once the staff were satisfied the cadets were allowed to walk under remote supervision conditions.

The second day was an eye opening experience for some of the new participants, tired and achy from the day before, it was a test to motivate and get up ready for a second day. Overcoming this initial apprehension, the cadets cooked themselves breakfast, packed and were ready.

Enjoying another sunny day in the mendips, the cadets did really well and made excellent time to their finish point, even with the day culminating with a steep hill!

It was a real pleasure to get to spend time with cadets that haven’t undertaken that many residential trips and I look forward to seeing them complete their qualifying expedition.
