FUNDRAISING EVENT ‘WE HEAR YOU’ (WHY)
On 10th November, some of our most accomplished singers performed at the drinks reception for a fundraising event for the Frome-based charity We Hear You (WHY). Why are a successful charity who are gaining more and more recognition every year, providing free counselling to anyone affected by cancer. They reach out to everyone in Bath and NE Somerset, Wiltshire and Somerset. They even bring their service into school to support Matravers students affected by Cancer.
The Winter Wonderland event was an elegant evening with banquet tables and live music entertainment, a casino raffle and auction. Held at Orchardleigh, it was a beautiful setting and a once in a lifetime opportunity
for Maddie Hewitt, Tom Bond and Maisie Long who all performed solos and duets at the beginning of the evening. Singing musical theatre numbers that included “Maria” from West Side Story, “Solo Saxophone” from Miss Saigon and “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” from Evita, our students’ performances helped to set the tone of sophistication for the fundraiser. Comments from members of the public included compliments about the quality of singing and disbelief at how young the singers were to be singing at this level.
The event raised a total of £6800 which pays for 154 sessions of counselling. Our students should be very proud of the part they played in this accomplishment.
WESTBURY MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL
An annual event in the music department’s calendar, this year’s Westbury Music and Arts Festival’s school’s concert continued the tradition of celebrating up and coming music from each of the participating schools. Matravers contributed performances from students in Year 7 all the way up to Year 13. The choir opened our section with an a cappella version of “Just the Way You Are” by One Direction. They were followed by Year 8 duo Callie Dredge and Courneigh Meadows who
sang “Read all About it”. by Emile Sande. Then Briony Patten-Cuff sang “Half the World Away”, accompanied by Carris Maskell on guitar. Finally, deputy head boy Charlie Loveridge performed “Discovery at Night” by Ludovico Einaudi on piano.
It was fantastic to have such a diverse group of performers representing us at this concert and it was, as always, a lovely event to take part in.
