all year groups and we would like to thank Mr Phillips (Assistant Headteacher) for his hard work in this area. He has continued to work very closely with parents and the Local Authority (through the Educational Welfare Officer) to reduce absence levels across all year groups.

Student Numbers. Recruitment into Year 7 remained stable in this period, as did the number of students joining the Matravers sixth form. School staff continue to work closely with the local feeder primary schools (and beyond) to ensure the transition process runs smoothly and that all impacted students and parents receive their full support during what can be an anxious period.

Educational Outcomes. Wiltshire is the only county in England that does not have a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) for students who have been permanently excluded from school. At Matravers, students who might otherwise be excluded are educated in our Alternative Provision (AP) facility. Due to their complex needs, AP students often have lower than average attendance rates and are unable to access the same range of subjects as other students. Their exam results are none the less included in the headline performance figures for the whole school. We are proud of the fact that our AP students achieve much better results than those in PRUs across the rest of England. The figures for the main school (minus AP) show that the 2017 GCSE results were in line with the national average. That is some achievement, considering the year group was well below national in their primary school Key Stage 2 grades. When you take into account the local context (comparing Matravers students with other students nationally with similar start points), Matravers was in the top 5% nationally for its GCSE results in 2017. This is an outstanding achievement given the challenges that some of our students face. The results for 2018 have not yet been validated but initial results are encouraging and suggest that Matravers continues its upward trend in this area.

Careers Information, Advice and Educational Guidance (CIAEG). In order to bring some consistency to the provision of CIAEG within schools, this year, the Department for Education has directed that all schools need to adhere to what are known as the ‘8 Gatsby Benchmarks’: schools must be compliant with these benchmarks by 2020. Matravers started from a very strong position having already embedded an excellent approach to CIAEG across the school and a recent report from Jenny Lawrie (the school’s Challenge and Support Partner) noted that the school was now ‘well above national figures in 6 of the 8 benchmarks’.
This in itself was quite an achievement; however the school has since been awarded the Careers and Enterprise Companies Regional School of the Year for the South West Region, as well as the National School of the Year award. This award is in recognition of the amazing work Matravers does in this area which has been superbly led by Miss Drewitt (Assistant Headteacher) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her on behalf of all students and parents.
Curriculum. Matravers has a broad and balanced curriculum designed to meet the specific needs of the current cohort. Rather than focus on ‘teaching the test’, Matravers remains committed to a ‘3 year Key
