PE (continued)

FOOTBALL ALL YEARS Across all age ranges and teams, Football has been quite successful so far this year. We have played a mixture of friendly games in preparation for some of the league fixtures after Christmas. We have also played in some preliminary rounds of local cups in a few year groups as well.

Unfortunately, all our fixtures so far have been with the boys teams however we are looking for future fixtures for girls football next Year. Our year 8 team stated well with a 3-2 win against Stonar with some exceptional football being played. Although the score line seems close, Matravers were by far the better football playing team. Unfortunately Stonar replied in kind against our year 9 team with a confident 5-0 win against us. 5 goals in quick fire succession in the first half proved crucial however for the rest of the game Matravers played equally as well, if not better against the opposition. Further wins for a mixed year 7 and 8 team and a year 10 team both against Stonar saw some great football being played. The younger year groups came out eventual and deserving 5-2 winners with some solid performances throughout the team. The year 10 team ran away with the game 7-2 with a confident and powerful performance, again with some fantastic individual performances.

The cup game previously mentioned involved Matravers and Kingdown in year 7. The game was evenly matched with Matravers scoring a great counter attack

GCSE PE

The Year 11 GCSE have been extremely busy since they started back in September. Lots of individuals have attended clubs in Trampolining, Netball and Badminton to further their GCSE marks in contribution toward their overall GCSEs at the end of the year. A group also took time out of their weekends to attend a Rock climbing experience over two Saturdays. Various skills of Rock climbing were practised and studied including belaying, safety aspects, abseiling (including asbesiling a 50 foot drop) and the rock climbing technique itself. Brokerswood and Split Rock Quarry were both visited to allow these skills to be developed culminating in the WOLT team, who ran the courses for us, bringing their mobile rock climbing wall into school so the students could finish their assessments. This in turn brought lots of excitement and interest with it towards the end of the day during the setting up process. Hopefully all their hard work and diligence will pay off come August results day as they all had exceptionally high levels of work ethic.

goal. The lead was held until the last ten minutes of the game when a well-worked goal drew Kingdown level. This only proved to spur Matravers on and demonstrated the team’s perseverance in which they played some high quality football and scored with 5 minutes to go. Although Kingdown pressurised for another equaliser Matravers held on and where close to scoring a few more goals and were eventual 2-1 winners.

The sixth form team also had a league game against John Bentley school. A quick goal for Matravers settled the early nerves. Four more goals followed in quick succession were scored to give Matravers a 5-0 lead. John Bentley did manage to score two goals before half time with some well taken individual goals. A further 3 goals after the half time consolidated a dominant performance. The sixth from team then went to play another fixture against Bishops from Swindon. This proved slightly harder opposition to play against not only as the opposition was technically better, the travelling squad was depleted of team members and early injuries meant the team played most of the game with only 10 individuals. Unfortunately this game ended in a loss for the team however with individuals returning from injury it only means more positive performances.

All the teams mentioned did have some outstanding performances however the most pleasing factor was the consistent team approach and ethos that ran through all the year groups. More fixtures await after Christmas and fingers crossed for more success.
