Welcome to the Christmas issue of The Matravers Newsletter.

It is always a pleasure to look back on the first term at the huge number of successes of our school community.

Settling in

we were meeting them for the first time – any early apprehensions about starting a new school have now long given way to engagement in their lessons, sports teams, the Performing Arts and our superb wider extra- curricular provision. Individual character is flourishing already. These are early days and there is a long way to go on their journey with us.

It has indeed been an exciting and interesting start to the academic year. This Newsletter can only briefly capture the essence of our school community, which is very special indeed. Our traditional, bespoke and independent ways of working do enable all students to succeed and thrive as young people. Academic success is vastly important but statistics alone cannot fully reflect the intangible aspects of success at the school; our culture extends far beyond the growing provision of exceptional academic education. Above national average attainment and national average progress demonstrates just how far we have come. It is only through paying careful attention to detail that anyone visiting the school would understand this.

World of opportunities

This Newsletter once again reflects the wealth of opportunity provided by our school for the benefit of our students. We greatly value our extra-curricular provision because we know that this enriches the lives of students and helps to broaden their horizons. From our students’ first day with us in Year 7 to their last in Year 11 or Year 13, the broad range of extra-curricular opportunities that exists is unmatched by others. There really is no reason why a student cannot benefit from this.

Full participation by everybody is an expectation at Matravers; the option to “buy-out” is not given. We believe that school trips, competitions, teams and clubs are an essential aspect of each young person’s journey through the Matravers experience. The newsletter

Our new Year 7s have been a wonderful addition to the Matravers family. They have settled in so well to our traditional ways of working. It seems but a moment ago that

chronicles the extremely rich and diverse range of activities that occur here, and I am immensely proud of all those whose achievements have contributed to this edition and who are celebrated within its pages.

Promoting an Arts Education

I must make special mention once again of another truly stunning school production this year of “We Will Rock You”. Every year we are blown away by the talent and commitment of students and staff to deliver a professional-standard show. We do sometimes take this for granted forgetting what it actually takes to deliver these amazing experiences. This is far more than just an “annual school production”!

Building programme

Our Site Master Plan continues to progress well as we continue to strive to deliver the very best facilities for your daughter’s/son’s education. In this edition you will be able to read about the continued huge investment into the school site. We are delighted that our projects are on-track at present.

Character education

We have been delighted to really progress the development of character education across the school this year. Developing character supports students to do well not just in school, but also beyond school as well. We believe that a successful education enables students to progress in life. Day-in, day-out we benefit from this within our school community.

Season’s Greetings

I hope you do put aside a good period of time to sit and read this Newsletter. As usual there are many things that are happening right at the end of term that we can’t even fit into this publication: the Christmas Concert; the annual CCF Christmas Mess Dinner; the superb choir “on the road”; the Celebration Assemblies; and so on. These will have to wait for another day.

I wish you all a safe and wonderful Christmas and peaceful New Year and look forward to all returning full of energy in January 2019 ready to raise the bar of expectations once again.
