YEAR 9 YEAR 9

The year group has entered year 9 with a great deal of maturity and enthusiasm. They have started exceptionally well and have appeared to have enjoyed the freedom of the choices they have made in relation to the subjects they are studying this year. A large amount of positive feedback has come from teachers on how well they have settled into the courses and how accomplished they are within the classes they are studying. This has been consolidated by a great set of MBU results not only within these subjects but also across all subjects. Around 2/3rd of the year group are already on track or exceeding expectations in comparison to their end of year targets in English and Maths and this hard work will prove dividend at the end of the year it this continues, a great start to the year well done!!!

The year group took part in a production from the Solomon Theatre company. The performance the company concentrated on was the dangers of drinking and the consequences of drinking if you become drunk and unaware of your actions, especially if you put yourself in vulnerable situations. The year group took part in question sessions with the cast after the performance surrounding the social issues encompassing underage drinking and the importance of gaining as much knowledge of the topic of alcohol and the dangers and limitations it has upon the body. Positive comments were made, not only by the theatre company on how well the pupils engaged with the process but by the pupils themselves on how much they enjoyed the performance and gave lots of positive feedback.

Earlier on in the year the year group was once again chosen to be ambassadors and tour guides for prospective parents for the up and coming new starters for next year. The feedback from staff on how they conducted themselves throughout the evening was fantastic. Even better was the feedback from the parents of the current year 6 pupils. So many superlatives were used about the year group of how helpful, knowledgeable and honest they were. To hear this again for the third year on the run is superb and a testament of how year 9 pupils really are. Well done to all involved and who gave up their free time.

Some of the year group also took part in an aim higher day with Bath Spa University who came into Matravers School. The pupils took part, with current members

of the University, in sessions surrounding myths and facts surrounding university life. Future careers and the skills needed as well as pay grades were also looked at. Different qualification routes were discussed in regards to accessing different qualifications for later in life including GCSE’s, BTEC’s at varying levels, degrees again at different levels and even masters and doctorates. The potential of accessing university degrees for themselves also were discussed in a variety of different capacities. Lots of the different careers were well known however many others were unknown and highlighted the vast number of careers out there for pupils to investigate. Pupils were also made aware of the inevitable future that they will be employed and trained for jobs not yet created and the will need skills that can be applied to these no matter the final destination.

“On the 26th November Bath Spa University visited our school. I enjoyed it because I learnt many new things such as how much various jobs were paid a year and what qualifications you need for each job. As well as this the students and teachers from Bath Spa University were very engaged with us and made it very enjoyable. After the visits I now have a clearer understanding of what I would like to do in the future and if I would like to go to University in the future. It was rewarding to meet people from beyond the school environment. It provided a wider perspective on the future for me” Daniel Jackson 9.2

The number of core value points from the year group so far has been astonishing. We are well on track to supersede the total from last year which was the highest
