YEAR 11

Year 11 is about exams. It is the way we work in this country and like it or loath it there comes a time when students have to be judged on their ability and effort. Year 11 is that time. What we have always strived for in the year group is to provide our students with an opportunity to express themselves outside of the sometimes-narrow bounds of academic achievement. Balancing work with fun (which is also hard work sometimes!) has proven time and again to be the secret to a lot of our Year 11 successes. Many of our top performers are top performers! It has been great to see members of the year group commit to our annual show year on year and now I get to see them leading. ‘We Will Rock You’ is a triumph and it wouldn’t be possible without Year 11 students on and off stage, giving up their time to make it happen. Our leaders are not just on the stage, of course and we now have two sergeants in our year group. Katie and Joe have committed to cadets since the beginning and is wonderful to see them bringing new recruits up through the ranks. Our year group have risen through the school, benefitting from the mentorship of older students and now are a conscientious, caring and considerate young people of whom I could not be prouder.

To begin the year on a real positive and celebrate how far they have come since Year7 we took a coach to Cumberwell Park golf club (which also doubles as the Prom venue). We ate a lovely sit-down meal and reflected on the year to come. Almost at the end of

who are beginning their recruitment drive for our Year group. Last year we won a special award for having so many Year 11s sign up. It is a programme that runs after exams and is something really worthwhile, if you’re wondering what they can do in that long summer ahead, after exams.

To prepare and support the students we have been running informal Period 6s for most of the coursework heavy subjects, such as PE, Travel & Tourism and Drama. It has been essential to get as much of their work done for these subjects before the focus shifts after the January mock results to a more formal system of channelling students to the right after school sessions. In addition to P6s we have opened the doors to the revision ‘bunker’. Students can head to the canteen for informal sessions of revision. Hot chocolate and goodies are available and the loyalty card scheme promises special rewards!

Our Thrive practitioner, Stacey will be with us throughout the year, supporting students with the pressures of the year, running drop-in sessions, attending assemblies and providing activities for tutors to run. Our Thrive hub has become an essential part of our pastoral support, driven by Mrs Dovey, who is always there for students in need of that extra bit of guidance and support, in addition to our super team of tutors.

Another event, which will have taken place when you read this, is our last ever Christmas celebration assembly. Celebrating the achievements of the year

Term 2 and well into mock exam preparation, this lovely early autumn day seems a long way off. By the time you read this I hope to have greeted you for our Year 11 Revision evening, aimed at supporting parents in supporting students through what is inevitably a tough year. You will also have had the first opportunity to meet representatives from The National Citizenship Service,
