SIXTH FORM

Following last summer’s results, the destinations many of our students secure remains a real strength of our Sixth Form. Many of our Year 13 students gained places on impressive university courses: 34 of the 44 students who applied were members of the first generation of their family to go to university and the vast majority managed to get into their first choice university, including 9 who have gone on to attend one of the prestigious Russell Group universities such as Cardiff, Warwick and Imperial College. As usual, the students have gone on to study a wide range of subjects, including Law, Aerospace Engineering, Geology, Religion, Forensic Science and Photography. Our current Year 13s are now going through the university application process, and are likewise looking at an eclectic range of courses, like Japanese Studies, Mental Health Nursing and History.

In September, we were visited by a representative of the University of Bath to discuss the ‘On Track’ programme the university runs which is aimed at supporting sixth formers in preparing for higher education. This is a highly over-subscribed programme during which successful applicants visit the university regularly over two years to plan and complete a piece of research with staff and students from Bath, as well as having a residential visit to get used to the idea of living away from home surrounded by other like-minded young people. We were delighted that 8 of our current Year 12s have been successful in their application and they are already getting stuck into their projects.

Life in the Sixth Form is not all about work though; it is important for all students to have a balanced lifestyle, and to this end Year 12 visited the outdoor activity centre at Mill on the Brue to have some fun, challenge their fears and (for some) to get very wet. Students worked in teams with varying degrees of success to build a river crossing from ropes and a few logs, they took a step into the unknown with the ‘leap of faith’ and some braved a zip wire which was, until recently, the longest in the UK. The Sixth Form football team has also been reformed and is, as I write, unbeaten.

Over the past few years, the Sixth Form has been working with Speakers for Schools, a national charity formed by the journalist Robert Peston which supports

state schools in getting high quality outside speakers to visit and talk with students. We are pleased to announce that they are impressed enough with us to name us as one of their ‘Partner Schools’, meaning we will be offered speakers on a more regular basis, as well as having access to other opportunities which we will share with you as they come on stream. We have recently had the pleasure of welcoming Dr Tracy Long CBE to visit the Sixth Form for a talk. She has had a long and very varied career, from starting as a typist with the production company behind Fame in Los Angeles, to setting up her own radio production company which was responsible for creating and launching Classic FM. Following this, she went on to work in the City and in television, before forming Boardroom Review, which advises the boards of major corporations around the world. Among her messages for the students was the need to work hard and not to be afraid to take chances if you wish to achieve your goals. It was a thoroughly inspirational talk which was warmly welcomed by the students.

Our students never fail to impress with their capacity to support others and to give freely for their own time. Many Year 12s have volunteered to support younger students in the school with their reading through our weekly Reading Buddies scheme, while others support in lessons and some visit local primary schools during school time. We had a very competitive Senior Student selection process this year, with all applicants impressing the interview panel with their self-confidence and maturity. While all the candidates were very credible, emerging as Head Girl was Emily Wain and Head Boy was Ben Gunstone. They have already been put to work representing the school at Open Evenings and they meet regularly with Dr Riding as well as with the rest of the Senior Student team.

This autumn, as well as the visit by Dr Long and the University of Bath, we have also welcomed our old friend Richard Wiltshire from Cardiff Metropolitan to advise on student finance, and by a representative of Unifrog to launch the website with Year 12. All our Sixth Form have free access to Unifrog which is a very smart online search engine for university courses and apprenticeships, as well as offering a huge range of
