Freya Feltham - Andy Warhol ART, DESIGN AND PHOTOGRAPHY LONDON GALLERY VISIT 2018

On a very damp and dark November morning a group of A level Art and Photography students, plus an invited selection of Year 10 students, boarded the luxury Chandlers coach and set off to the galleries of London.

We arrived at Trafalgar Square and immersed ourselves in the richness that is the National Gallery. From Medieval Art through Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Constable through to the Impressionists. It was a shame that the latter rooms were hosting a special Impressionist exhibition, but we were still able to see close-up some of the paintings for real that we had only seen on the internet. The rich brush strokes and vivid colours were so different to the earlier work in the gallery. From there we moved swiftly around the corner to the National Portrait Gallery to see some of their permanent portrait collection, whilst some of the Photography students used this visit as an opportunity to view the Taylor Wessing Exhibition, celebrating the best of contemporary photographic portraits.

After a short lunch break, sampling the many delights of the local food establishments, we met up for the long walk over the Thames down to Tate Modern on the South Bank. It was at this point that the heavens decided to open, and eventually a very drenched and tired gaggle of students arrived at The Tate. The exhibitions and building of the Tate were not a disappointment, and the modern architecture and more challenging artwork on all the separate floors seem to

excite everyone. It is true to say that some of the more conceptual pieces raised a few eyebrows, but at least they created a reaction. The Year 12 Photography

students produced a range of photographs that explored their Space and Voids theme, especially with the new extension building with its arching staircases and vault like lower floors.

It was a such a pleasure to take this group to

London, and despite not bumping in to any

celebrities, it was great to see how they all responded to such a wide range of visual arts. It will now be interesting to see how this visit influences their own artwork.
