Because bed-wetting gets better on its own, in the past, doctors often said to parents and kids, “Don’t worry about it”. But if it’s causing anxiety or social problems, it’s important to know there are things families can do to make the situation better.

Keeping record Observation
It is very important to find as many indications as possible what the reason could be for this problem.
When does the child wet his bed/pants? • No specific pattern. • Usually after a meal. • During resting/sleeping time at the day-care centre. • During outside play. • Before or after a specific activity. • Soon after arrival at the day-care centre. • Every night. • Only weekends or only during the week.
What happens just before he wets his pants? • Child is in the bathroom. • Child sees another child urinating. • The child is pulling off his pants to urinate. • The child is washing his hands. • The child is busy with water play. • The child is tired.
What does the child do after wetting his pants? • Shouts out loud what happened. • Whispers, telling educator what happened. • Keeps quiet about it.
What is the child’s fluid intake? • Does he drink just before going to bed? • Does he drink more fluid than his peers? • Does the child keep on touching his private parts – can be an indication of an infection.
Young children tend to get urinary or kidney infections. A medical problem can therefore also be the cause of the problem. Be aware of complaints of pain and itchiness. Even if you do not notice something, discuss it with the parents. Encourage them to take the child for a medical examination.
Some children wear clothes that are difficult to put on or take off. They struggle to loosen the buttons and then cannot control their urine. Take note of how they dress/undress in the bathroom/toilet if the clothes are the reason, and discuss it with the parents.
A child with a problem must be reminded every 30 minutes to go to the toilet. Tell him that it is time to go and take him by the hand to the toilet. When he urinates in the toilet, praise him. If the child does not want to urinate after two minutes, go back to the room and repeat the procedure later on.
