This technique works better with older pre-schoolers. A child that misbehaves does not feel good about himself. Often, a child is willing to try to solve the problem with the help of his educator. Discuss the behaviour with the child in a quiet part of the room. Try to find a solution together.
3.6 Special time
Often, children do things to get attention. Special time means that the educator sets aside a few minutes every day to spend some time with a specific child. Pay special attention to the child. A compliment, a hug or touching the shoulder sends the message that you are aware of the child and makes the child feel special.
3.7 Star chart
A star chart works well as the child has a visible record of progress towards appropriate behaviour. It is visible reinforcement. It should be a record of success and not failures. This chart is more effective for home use, but it can also be used at the day-care centre. Example: every time the child leaves his working area neat for the next child, he is allowed to paste a star next to his name.
3.8 Taking away privileges
You can tell the child that he is not allowed to watch his favourite TV programme, because his behaviour was not acceptable. The punishment must suit the age of the child.
3.9 Corporal punishment
So what of spanking children? Does it work? There are people say that giving a child a smack on the bottom sends a strong message and will keep the child from any future misbehaviour.
Opponents say that it borders on child abuse and that it really doesn’t work. Which is right? While it is a personal decision and one that should be made depending on what works best for your family, there are important factors to consider.
1 Why parents spank their children
For some parents, spanking is a natural form of discipline – perhaps they were spanked as a child themselves. Others see it as a good punishment when a child is about to get hurt or finds themselves in a dangerous situation (running across a parking lot or into a street perhaps). Others use spanking as a last resort – when no other discipline methods have worked. Sometimes spanking happens when a parent simply gets angry, reacts to what a child has just done and spanks in order to send a strong message in the hopes that the child will not engage in that behaviour again.
