N6 Educational Psychology 2.2.2 Test for school readiness

Only a person that is qualified to do so can test a child for school readiness. People such as educational psychologists usually do the testing, but social workers and other therapists are often trained to do these tests.

There are different tests available. The best would be one that will determine the general development of the child. It would also detect neurological and concentration problems, as well as auditory and visual defects. If the emotional maturity of the child can also be evaluated, it would be a great benefit. Tests will not only focus on problem areas but will also determine the child’s strong points.

Tests will determine aspects such as the following:

• Social and emotional development - Is the child ready to be separated from his parents?

- Can he obey rules; make friends; play in a group?

- Can he work on his own, concentrate for at least 15 minutes?

- Can he follow instructions?

• Language, cognitive thinking, auditory perception - Can the child listen with understanding, and can he recall information?

- Can he follow verbal instructions? - Can he hear differences and similarities?

• Mathematical concepts - Can the child understand number concepts?

- Can he count? Can he sort? Can he classify?

• Perceptual and motor development - Can he balance his body? Does he know where left and right is?

- Does he have a dominant hand? A school ready child will be either left- or right- handed.

- Can he use both sides of the body? Can he cross his midline when doing activities?

• Drawing - Can he draw a man? - Does his drawing have form and dimension?

- Is there order in the drawing and in the way it is spaced on the paper?

- Is there a baseline and is there a line indicating the top of the drawing?
