Module 1 • School Readiness 3.2 Body awareness
The child must be able to distinguish one body part from another. He must also know how his body is moving in space. From this body awareness, the child develops laterality.
3.2.1 Laterality Laterality makes it possible for the child to know which side is moving and how it is moving, as well as when the side is moving and how it is moving.
Exercises (distinguish between left and right):
• Show me your left hand and right foot. Now touch your right foot with your left hand.
• Let the child lie on a paper and his friend must trace the outline of his body. He can then cut out his own outline, paint and/or colour it in. Add body parts like the nose, hair, etc. Discuss what the child is doing while he is busy working on his outline.
• Draw a child without hands and ask the child to fill in the missing detail. • Use a puzzle with body parts. • Show a picture: What is the man doing? Where is the car? Where is the sun? Is the car near or far? Is the sun near or far?
• Include the concepts left and right in everyday language. Encourage the parents also to do it at home.
3.2.2 Dominance
It is important that the dominance is stable, although it doesn’t matter which side is dominant. Mixed dominance (both sides are equally strong/dominant) can be a hindrance for successful learning.
To test dominance
Hand dominance: • Which hand does he use to - throw a ball? - eat with a spoon? - draw with a crayon?
Foot dominance: • Which foot does he use to - kick a ball? - climb onto a low bench?
Eye dominance: • Which eye does he use to - peep through a cardboard roll? - peep through a hole in a piece of cardboard?
In all of these instances, he will use the dominant/stronger hand, foot, eye. DEFINITION
Body awareness is the child’s awareness of his body and the possibilities of the body (what he can/cannot do with his body)
DEFINITION
Laterality is the inner awareness of the two sides of the body. These sides are called “left” and “right”
DEFINITION
One side of the two sides of the body is usually dominant. The dominant side is more developed and gives guidance.
