Activity Our ears


To learn about the role of the ears


Give each child a small mirror. Let them have a look at their ears. Possible questions:


What can you tell me about your ears? Where are your ears? Do all the children’s ears look alike? What do we hear with our ears?

Producing sounds Objective: Experience the creation of sounds


Ask each child to select an object in the group and to produce a sound with it by knocking it with one hand; two hands; fingers only; by shaking it.

Smelling and knowing what we smell • The upper part of the nostril is where man absorbs smell. • It functions by inhaling air filled with all kind of odours. • People can discriminate between great numbers of odours, but it is difficult to describe odours.


• Try and make the child aware of various smells whenever the opportunity arises. • Smell and taste are strongly related and the one may affect the other, e.g. if something does not smell good, we imagine it will not taste nice so we do not eat it.


• Familiar smells maybe associated in our minds with certain things, people or events. • Smell can also be absorbed from a distance. Children rely on their senses to identify objects.


Objectives: Why do we teach this topic?


1. To develop the child’s sensitivity to smells. 2. To develop the child’s awareness of the function of smelling in the process of gathering information.


3. To enable the child to identify objects through smelling. 4 To develop the child’s understanding of the limitations of the sense of smell. 5. To develop the ability to explain the meaning of smells and to check these explanations through the use of other senses.


6. To develop the skill of describing impressions from various smells and appreciation of smell both verbally and through creative activity.
