N6 Educational Psychology 8 Keeping record
Identify the behaviour: Can it be described as shyness? (the child does not participate in activities). Observe the behaviour:
Observe the child the times that he is shy or doesn’t participate in activities.
What is the child doing during group activities? • he sits still and does not participate • he does not participate, but you can see he is enjoying it • the child looks very unhappy • the child watches the educator and/or children all the time • the child tries to move away from the other children • he stares in front of him all the time.
What is the child doing during individual times?
• The same as the above? • Does he participate in group but not individual activities?
What happens when the child is being asked a question or the educator calls him? • He does not respond. • He whispers an answer. • He tries to answer, but he only says a few words. • He answers with a yes or a no. • He hides his face. • He gets upset. • Starts crying. • He walks away. • He runs to another adult.
Use the information that you acquire to help the child to overcome his shyness and to involve him in activities.
Think about the group activities. Maybe the child does not want to participate because it is too easy or too difficult. Maybe it is not interesting enough. Make sure you present suitable activities – they must suit the child’s developmental level and interests.
Maybe the child is in a group where he feels intimidated by younger or older children. If possible, move the child to another group.
It can be caused by a hearing problem. If the child cannot hear properly, he might react by keeping quiet. Maybe he cannot hear the questions at all.
CASE STUDY 1
Everybody but Ben is singing. He is four years old and sits quietly looking downwards, hands on his lap and shows no response. When the children say finger rhymes, the same thing happens. Another educator also notices it and moves closer to him. She takes his hand and does the action with his fingers, but he still does not respond. The educator wonders why he is not responding.
