Activity So many shapes
Objective: To recognise the diversity of objects and shapes, e.g. the floor tiles, the wall hangings, books, puzzle parts, clothes
Find the object:
Objective: Matching objects by touching them, e.g. a child takes an article out of a bag and the other children have to take the same article out of their bags by feeling the shape Find your friend:
Objective: Identifying a friend by observing from an unfamiliar angle, e.g. one child leaves the room. Four children are lined up facing the wall with their heads bent down. The first child is called in and he has to name the children against the wall.
Let’s discover objects from above
Objective: Identifying objects from an unusual height Take the children up a high hill, or the top of a building.
Explain to them beforehand what your intentions are and what is expected from them. Tell them about things that may be seen e.g. dams, schools, parks, sports ground etc. When they are on the hill, see if they can find them. Get their opinion of what the place looks like from a height in comparison to what it looks like from ground level.
Do objects with similar names also have a similar shape? Objective: Perception of shape diversity within a group of similar objects
Can different objects have similar shapes?
Objective: Perception of a similar shape characterising different objects, e.g. a shoe box, a brick, a rectangle, a ball, a marble, a sweet Shape matching
Objective: Finding a functional connection between shapes, e.g. keys and their keyholes, serrated scissors and various pieces of paper cut out with them
Creative art with shapes
Objective: Experience with free moulding of shapes out of various materials, e.g. clay moulding and paper machine moulding
