3.8.7 Other concepts • Bring me two apples. Divide them between you and Sam – how many did you get each? • Bring me one apple; divide it between you and Sam. How did you divide it? How much did you get each?
• Concept: whole, half, two halves make one whole. • Help to set table. Bring a tablecloth and put it on the table. Now bring a knife and fork for each person. How many knives and forks are there? Put the knives on the right-hand side and the forks on the left -hand side.
3.8.8 Orientation of time Ask questions like: • How old are you now? How old will you be next birthday? How old were you before your last birthday?
• Is it morning, afternoon or evening now? Why do you say so? • What day is it today? Yesterday? Tomorrow? • Where did we go last week? What happened to you yesterday? • Name the days of the week. • Is it summer or winter now? Concepts: today, yesterday, a long time, a short time, early, late. Ending, beginning, now, finished, past, the four seasons, second, hour, minute, day, year, next week, last week.
3.8.9 Speed • Walk slowly/fast to the tree. • Who runs the fastest, the rabbit or the tortoise? • Which is the faster/slower – bicycle or motor cycle? • Look at a clock. Which of the hands move faster – the one showing the seconds, or the minute hand?
3.8.10 Measurement • Many things help us to measure: - the clock (time) - thermometer (temperature) - a measuring tape (measures length) - a scale (measures mass).
3.8.11 Data handling • Graphing activities for pre-school and kindergarten include collecting data and organising it in a variety of ways. Try the following activities to make sure the child understands the concepts when going to school.
- When children walk around the classroom and ask their friends which cereal they prefer, put a tally mark under the cereal picture, and count how many tally marks are in each column, they are not only graphing but also working with statistics or data analysis.
