ELRU is nationally and internationally recognised for over 36 years of high quality, high impact service to build the foundation of education – the support needed by children aged birth to 9 years to engage with the world of informal learning and work.
Since 1978, the Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU) has worked with people in communities throughout Southern Africa toward the realisation of human potential, exploring new initiatives, and developing replicable and affordable strategies for the ECD sector
Their programmes include:
CAPACITY BUILDING • Accredited training programmes for those working in early childhood development: teachers, trainers, community development workers, health workers, NGO staff groups, government officials, parents
• Training in integrating diversity, anti-bias and non-violence in educational settings • Post-training advisory and support for implementation • Facilitated stakeholder dialogue for establishing development initiatives that provides ECD services in communities
• Family and Community Motivators [FCM] programme is a community development programme, focusing on children and parents in their homes. It is an integrated ECD programme and assists caregivers in accessing services for young children
By: • Focusing on children who are outside ECD centres • Assisting ECD workers • Influencing the Children’s Act • Children’s advocacy • Training modules on assisting Grade R teachers with programme planning, literacy, numeracy • HIV/AIDS training specific to the early childhood development context • Training and support to ECD centres , communities and principals
MULTIMEDIA MULTILINGUAL MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT
• Publications for children • Guides for teachers, parents • Resources for techno-assisted and e-learning support for ECD practitioners, including radio and DVDs
• Public ECD awareness messaging • Research publication • Newsletters for ECD practitioners
