Important components of the programme Active learning:
Personal experience and involvement. Key elements: Layout of room: Daily routine:
Language, experience, numbers, spatial awareness, awareness of time, and other examples of these experiences.
Must encourage the child to explore and learn. Therefore it is necessary to divide the room into different areas.
The daily routine must make provision for a variety of interaction between the children, and the adults and the children. Routine provides security.
Observation of child: Through observation in the learning environment, the Educarer will be able to do strategic planning.
Parent involvement: Parents must be involved by planning parents’ evenings, newsletters, posters, workshops, etc. They play an important role in the programme.

Services offered by Grassroots
1. FIELD SERVICES: A variety of courses offered in the Educare field.
Some of the shorter courses are aimed at the specific field. Examples: management course, financial course. There is also a specific course to be trained to take care of children that are younger than three years old. Many people that offer home-based care follow this programme.
2. NATIONAL PROGRAMME Skills -based courses and support are offered to people in the field. Skills like community involvement, interpersonal relations, problem-solving and analytical skill are addressed.
3. PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING It is very difficult to keep up with the changes that are taking place, especially in the early childhood development field.
Grassroots keep their ears close to the ground and work with people on the grassroots level. 4. RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
They do research on a continuous basis to stay in touch with all the latest development and to be able to determine what material is the most suitable for the course.
5. MEDIA AND MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT Due to financial restraints, they had to cut on audio-visual material and external newsletters.
6. LIBRARY They try to offer all the information in three languages (Afrikaans, English and Xhosa).
