N6 Educational Psychology
The Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU) is a research and development organisation that pilots early childhood development programmes for use in urban and rural contexts. It offers training to teachers and trainers; community development programmes; and produces training materials and learner resources in different languages.

Programmes - Their Family and Community Motivator programme trains local people to support families in strengthening their child-care practices and stimulating learning from birth – particularly since most young children in our country are not able to attend ECD centres.
- Wakh’umntwanaWakh’isizwe brings services together at local level to create safety nets for vulnerable young children in poor and isolated communities.
- Research, monitoring and evaluation programmes take place. - They produce exciting children’s books that feature real characters in a range of different cultural and natural settings. Some of them tackle difficult issues that children are dealing with in a friendly way, challenging negative attitudes and providing positive alternatives.
- They provide teacher training and training for trainers for those requiring qualifications in ECD or simply wanting to improve their skills for promoting children’s learning and well-being.
Achievements - Their children’s books have had great reviews and some have been adapted for the SABC 1 children’s programme, Ntunjambili, which promotes reading.
- Donors regard ELRU as a critical partner in scaling up services to reach more children. ELRU’s family-based programme has been taken up in other organisations that have a national footprint and in provincial government programmes.
- Their research department is internationally respected and contributes to a wide range of government and private initiatives.
- Their training and curriculum development expertise is highly regarded in- and outside SA. Recently it was contracted to develop the ECD curriculum for the Malawian social services department and to introduce the material to their trainers. ELRU is accredited by the ETDP SETA and has provisional registration with the Department of Education as a Further Education and Training College. ELRU offers a host of services to the ECD community in South Africa, including: • training programmes for people working in the ECD field • research and other education and training materials, and • diversity training programmes.
