Module 3 • Teaching Methods Introduction


Grassroots Educare Trust believes that it is the right and responsibility of every community to be in charge of the education and care of pre-school children. The development of the community’s responsibility concerning early childhood development is their cornerstone.

General background Grassroots want to:


• Develop leadership and organising qualities, so that the communities will be able to develop their own projects.


• To provide training for adults, especially in the early childhood field. • Develop suitable programmes and the curriculum for the children and their families. • Provide parent training programmes to equip the parents with the necessary skills. • Change the teaching system, and • Provide an integrated system for ECD.


Grassroots want to work toward a democratic South Africa, where everyone will have access to educational, political and economic advantages.


According to Grassroots, early childhood development is about the development of confident and healthy children. It is important to look at the child in totality.


When training teachers, the one primary aim is to hook onto what teachers already know. In South Africa, all educational institutions are starting to use this approach (recognition of prior learning – RPL). Unnecessary time is not spent on work that the person already knows. Current knowledge is used as a starting point. Currently, they are also in the process of phasing out their courses that they have offered and are implementing the SAQA-registered courses.


Grassroots tries to develop new ideas and tries to stay abreast of development that is taking place.

2. The key elements of this programme


• Use of an applicable curriculum that must be evaluated. • All the people in the Educare field must get trained. • A good support system for educational staff. • Work in teams (co-operation). • The teacher-child ratio should be 1:20 or a maximum of 1:30.
