Teacher Training


Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) This course will equip you with skills and knowledge to work with children in schools. You will be supporting the teacher in working with group and/or individual children in a range of classroom activities.


Entry requirements: College interview and assessment, plus Level 1 qualification. You will need to find your own placement. You will need to have completed a DBS check prior to starting the course.


Possible next steps: Level 3 Childcare/Teaching Assistant courses or employment.


Length of course: 36 weeks. You will attend knowledge sessions one day a week and will be in a voluntary or paid setting 12 hours a week.


Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) – (formerly PTLLS) This is an initial qualification to enter the teaching profession. The course prepares candidates to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions in a wide range of contexts.


Entry requirements: You must have a minimum qualification at Level 3 in your subject specialism, Level 2 in English and be working towards Level 2 in maths.


Possible next steps: Level 4 Certificate in Education and training or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching and Training, or employment.


Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) – (Formerly DTLLS) This course is for anyone working as or planning to become a fully qualified teacher in further, adult or continuing education. It gives trainees the opportunity to:


Ÿ develop knowledge related to teaching and learning


Ÿ develop skills in and learn about teaching, training and tutoring


Ÿ achieve a nationally recognised Level 5 qualification


Entry requirements: You should have a Level 3 qualification in the subject you intend to teach and Level 2 in English and maths, GCSE or equivalent. You will need to be teaching for at least 100 hours over the length of the course. (We do not provide placements).


Possible next steps: This Diploma qualifies you for Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. You can go on to become a fully qualified teacher in further, adult and community education, for example, as a further education lecturer. Or, you could become a fully qualified teacher in a work-based learning setting or the voluntary sector.


Length of course: 48 weeks Hours per week: 4 (evening)
