Carpentry and Joinery


Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery As a trainee in Carpentry and Joinery, you will learn the following: hand tools and their uses, cleaning and maintenance, basic carpentry joints and about the materials that you will use. You will learn how to use portable power tools, how to work safely, the building team and how it works together as a team. You will also learn how to communicate and work effectively with others, as well as learning basic building methods and construction technology. You will get the chance to learn how to quantify materials required for the work you will be expected to do and how to safely move and store materials. In addition you will learn about employment rights and responsibilities.


Entry requirements: Entry 3 in English and maths, determined by College assessment or GCSE English and maths grades A-D.


Possible next steps: Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or an apprenticeship if employed.


Length of course (weeks): 36 Hours per week: Offered full-time and part-time


Level 2 Diploma in Site Joinery or Bench Joinery You will learn how to store and handle materials, erect basic working platforms (tower scaffolds), work effectively and safely as a team, hang doors, fix architrave and skirting, fix door frames and linings, case in services, lay joisting and floors and erect trussed rafter roofs. The course offers an ‘option route’ to a qualification in carpentry and you can choose between Site Carpentry and Bench Joinery, which we can discuss with you at interview or enrolment. You will study a combination of theory and practical units, with exams at the end of each unit plus a final exam at the end of the year.


Entry requirements: Successful completion of NVQ Level 1 or Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.


Possible next steps: Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry or the appropriate apprenticeship framework at Level 3.
