Level 1 OCNLR Certificate in Skills for Professions in Health and Social Care This level 1 programme is an opportunity for students to develop skills and gain knowledge in health and social care related subjects while developing your English language and literacy skills. This will to enable you to progress to Level 2 courses. You will study subjects such as Communication in Health and Social Care, Person- Centred Support, Equality and Inclusion and Dementia Awareness. The course is aimed at adult students returning to study who wish to develop their study skills, so there will be units on note-taking, presentation skills, spelling, punctuation and grammar to support you. There will also be an opportunity to undertake a two week work experience placement in a health or social care setting.


Entry requirements: Applicants should be aged over 19, have an entry level qualification or demonstrate an appropriate level of English, undertake a College written assessment and interview and provide a suitable reference. Applicants will also have a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.


Possible next steps: Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care or childcare.


Length of course (weeks): 36 Hours per week: 8 plus English, or ESOL, and maths.


Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Health and Social Care This course is aimed at people who want to work in the rewarding Health and Social Care sector and who are seeking a vocational grounding. We also help you if you need to improve your language skills. The course focuses on your professional knowledge and the skills you need to help you find work. You will study the following mandatory units: principles of communication, personal development, diversity equality and inclusion, safeguarding and protection, duty of care, the role of the care worker, person centred approaches, health and safety and how to handle information in social care settings. You also study Functional Skills maths and English and do a work experience placement.


Entry requirements: Level 1 Health and Social Care (Pass) or course-specific written assessment and an appropriate level of English. This course requires you to do a work placement where you will be required to work in a supporting role within a health/social care/ childcare setting. As an organisation that is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults we will ask you to have an enhanced DBS check. GCSE grade C or above in English is desirable.


Possible next steps: This course should give you a head start in finding employment in the growing healthcare sector. The qualification has been developed to meet the National Occupational Standards required in workplace settings. It relates closely to the Health and Social Care Level 2 Diploma (formerly NVQ) and the knowledge gained will be recognised by employers/ apprenticeship frameworks. You could also progress onto a Level 3 Health and Social Care course. Students will need GCSE English and maths, grade C or above to progress further in health and social care.


Length of course (weeks): 36


Hours per week: 12 (with language support). Without language support, 1 day a week.
