Painting and Decorating


Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating As an apprentice or trainee in painting and decorating, you will learn the following: hand tools and their uses, cleaning and maintenance, basic painting and wallpapering techniques and about the materials that you will use. You will learn how to use portable power tools, how to work safely, the building team and how it works together. You will also learn how to communicate and work effectively with others, as well as learning basic building methods and construction technology. You will get the chance to learn how to quantify materials required for the work you will be expected to do and how to safely move and store materials. In addition you will learn how to estimate and quantify for material requirements, plus learn about employment rights and responsibilities.


Entry requirements: Entry 3 in English and maths, determined by College assessment or GCSE English and maths grades A-D.


Possible next steps: Progression routes include the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or an apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating at Level 2.


Length of course (weeks): 36 Hours per week: 15


Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating As a second year apprentice or trainee in painting and decorating, you will learn the following: basic specialist decorative effects, hand tools and their uses, cleaning and maintenance, trade level painting and wallpapering techniques and about the materials that you will use. You will learn how to use portable power tools, how to work safely, the building team and how it works together as a team and how to communicate and work effectively with others. Basic building methods and construction technology also form a part of this course.


Entry requirements: Foundation Construction Award/Diploma (Level 1).


Possible next steps: Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or an apprenticeship if employed.
