NEW COURSE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Early years Education and Care (Early Years Educator): QCF Work based This Level 3 Childcare qualification will enable you to become an Early Years’ Educator and to work with children from birth to 5 years old. Students will cover 4 key themes which will include:


Health and well-being; legislation, frameworks and professional practice; play, development and learning for school readiness and professional development. You will also undertake a longitudinal study involving child observations and undertake 350 placement hours in a range of work settings to gain practical experience of working with children of different age groups.


Entry requirements: You should be aged over 19, have GCSE English and maths at Grade C or above, undertake a College written assessment and interview and provide a suitable reference. You will also have a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.


Possible next steps: Employment as an Early Years Educator in a range of child care settings.


Length of course: 36 weeks (two evenings per week 4.30-9pm) plus 350 placement hours.

Foundation Degree in Early Years Childhood Studies This course is designed for people working with young children in public, private, voluntary and independent childcare and education settings. It gives a higher- level qualification and career development for people working as a childminder or in group settings such as a nursery, pre-school, community crèche or children’s centre environments. You’ll learn about play, children’s development, the young child in a historical, political and socio-cultural context and the implications of this for practice in early childhood settings. The course therefore draws on a range of disciplines such as psychology, sociology and social policy, education and health.


Entry requirements: You need to be at least 18 years old; must have a Level 3 Childcare qualification; GCSEs grade A-C in maths and English; at least 2 years’ experience of working with children and a suitable reference. There is also a written College assessment and interview. You will need to apply directly through UCAS at www.ucas.com/apply and select London Met Uni UCAS CODE: X945


During the course, students are required to be working with young children in a voluntary or paid setting. You will also attend College one full day and one evening session per week. A key feature of the course is its emphasis on the development of professional as well as academic skills and knowledge.


Possible next steps: You could progress to London Metropolitan University for the final year of your degree: BA (Hons) Early Childhood studies or the BA (Hons) Early Childhood studies with Early Years.
