replenish the venue, Hall for Cornwall made the decision to improve its presence on the Quay, which involved revamping the front of the building. Simon continued: “As we’re a listed building, that presented some challenges. A local freelancer, Chris Watts recommended the GDS BlueBeam LED fittings, and we put a design together. We received permission for the design, and the BlueBeams are now in- stalled on the front of the building. It all worked very well and we were very pleased. We received a lot of positive feedback. While installing the BlueBeams, GDS also spent some time inside the building. Simon said: “They had a product they wanted a first home for, and by coincidence, we were looking to update our house lights.” Hall for Cornwall wanted to replace its existing incandescent auditori- um lighting system with a new lower energy LED solution. Cornwall is very environmentally aware as a county, and in the last six years, Hall for Cornwall has actively been trying to adhere to that notion wherever possible. On paper the new GDS solution indicated it would save the venue nearly 32 tonnes of CO2 per year. As well as the environmental advantages, GDS was also confident the work could be carried out without changing the aesthetics of the building or the overall effect of the existing house lights - another important requirement set out by Hall for Cornwall.

Simon said: “The carbon reduction is huge and it means the system will pay for itself in a very short space of time, especially when you

factor in that there’s no more lamp changes, no more lamps to buy or dispose of. The environmental side was a big factor for us and it was a big influence in us choosing to go down this route. But it also had to be in a product that worked. As you’ll appreciate theatre is all about presentation, if they don’t look right, they don’t dim right, and the colour temperature is all wrong, then it wasn’t going to work for us.” The solution was to install a GDS 8 Cell ArcSystem, making Hall for Cornwall the world’s first full installation of the ArcSystem. The 8 Cell ArcSystem fixtures were placed into custom made housing units so that they would sit perfectly within the existing brackets. In fact, due to the superior light output of ArcSystem, it was only necessary to re- place half of the old fittings to achieve the required ambient light level. Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the installation was to im- prove the levels of lighting at the rear of the auditorium, where previ- ously there had been some dark and patchy spots. The in house crew took care of this, fitting the new light sources into wooden panels that are suspended above the audience. The result was an improved evenness of coverage in the auditorium and a much more comfortable colour temperature. Simon said: “It was really nice to have our crew totally behind it and play a part in making the installation happen. It provided a greater sense of involvement for both them and the venue. As well as the benefits of a better understanding of how things were put together and where to start looking if there’s a problem in the
