MAYALAND - PLOPSALAND
Company: ShowTex Location: De Panne, Belgium
Studio 100, now a worldwide name in children’s entertainment, began in 1996 with children’s television programme, ‘Samson and Gert’. The years following saw Studio 100 expand into additional television programs and characters, film, musical production, theme parks, and mer- chandising. Studio 100’s Plopsaland De Panne park launched a new attraction this summer. To complement the park’s 40-plus rides and attractions, Plopsa opened a 5,000 sq metre indoor section in the main theme park called Mayaland, dedicated to the popular Studio 100 character - Maya the Bee. From the beginning, Studio 100 has partnered with local flame retardant fabric manufacturer ShowTex for customised soft furnishing
solutions. The ShowTex team in Belgium installed print- ed backdrops lining all indoor walls, track systems and soft goods for inside the attractions at all the Plopsaland theme parks, including Mayaland. As digital print technology improves and flame retardant fabrics for print are produced on wider and wider rolls, the options for theme parks have increased. What used to be constructed from heavy cumbersome materials in carpentry and paint workshops, can now be replicated on fabric exactly as the original designs intended. Studio 100 chose the Cyclo 300 CS print canvas developed by ShowTex for sharp colourful prints to create the fairy tale indoor environment of Plopsaland. The permanently flame retardant fabric meets the strictest safety standard and never needs retreatment, even in environments with a lot of moisture present. The printed canvases in Mayaland cover a surface area of more than 2,000 sq metres, equal to about 240 running metres of fabric and weighing a little over 600kg. The flexibility and fast install time of textile is a definite advantage when working at heights of 14 metres and higher, especially given that the entire Mayaland park was completed in just under six months. ShowTex installed the curtain track first at height, then as the restaurants, shops, and rides, were built, careful attention was paid to the print designs so that all the measurements of the canvas matched up when they were installed towards the end theme park construction.
