VENUE 069
ACHERN CODEX
WHEN CODEX’S OWNERS WERE FORCED TO LOOK FOR A NEW LOCATION, IT TURNED OUT TO BE A BLESSING IN DISGUISE. THE NEW VENUE ISN’T JUST A PURPOSE BUILT, MULTI-ROOM NIGHTCLUB, IT IS A SHOWCASE OF SOME OF THE BIGGEST AND NEWEST PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET.
ACHERN, GERMANY EUROPE/MIDDLE EAST/AFRICA
In mid-August, over three days spent in southern Germany, I experienced for the first time the cultural phenomenon that is a Bavarian beer festival. I also discovered what happens when an Audi S6 meets the freedom of the autobahn, and although both were thoroughly enjoyable experiences, in an ideal world I probably would have spaced them a little further apart. On the morning that followed an evening at Gäubodenvolksfest, EVI Audio’s Helmut Seidl and I drove west, in the direction of Stuttgart, to honour an appointment with Lindenmeyer GmbH’s Albert Lindenmeyer and Roland Kruck. During our time with the pair, we visited three of their recent installations; two sports arenas - SCHARRena and Stadion Festweise - and a nightclub called Codex. Manufacturers are reliant on the knowledge and passion of their dealers to help drive their business forward. In Lindenmeyer GmbH, EVI Audio has an authorised dealer that offers both in abundance, helping to bring brands like DYNACORD and Electro-Voice to the market. Based in Stuttgart, the company was founded in the 1980s by Albert Lindenmeyer. It became a limited liability company, taking on the GmbH extension in 2003, and with it a renewed focus. “Our emphasis is the satisfaction of customers. A satisfied customer gets from his equipment the exact functionality and performance that he demanded, at a price level that works with his budget,” explained Roland Kruck. Lindenmeyer GmbH may only have five employees, but each is possessed with particular skills and knowledge that allow the company to tackle a variety of different projects. As will be demonstrated here, this can be as heterogeneous as a nightclub is to a sports arena, and diversifies to other public spaces like educational buildings, retail environments and airports. Codex is the brainchild of Christian Pichler - a man who “grew up
in the disco” and continues to be submerged in everything to do with nightclubs. His DJ alias is Deejay Rocchound, and it is this vehicle that has allowed him to experience, firsthand, many different clubbing environments. It was his father who started the Pichler entertainment legacy, as a mobile DJ in the 1970s, known as Charly 2000. The company - Charly 2000 GmbH - was formed, and the legacy has grown ever since. For 12 years, the entertainment company operated a nightclub in Achern - a town located only 37km east of Strasbourg on the France-Germany border - until the building’s lease ran out and there was no offer of another term. As it turns out, this was a blessing in disguise, because it provided the impetus for a new, purpose built venue situated just outside the town. The purity of a completely blank canvas gave Christian the freedom for a creative mind storm. It also proved to be an attractive proposition to those involved in the systems integration. “This place is nothing like the old place because the old one is 10 years older, it is something totally different,” explained Christian. “This place has seven areas, so it’s not just about playing music and selling drinks, it’s more about entertainment. People can sit outside and drink a cocktail, or go inside and play video games, not everybody wants to dance. It changed; the nightlife has changed.” Whilst the nightscape may have changed, the people that Christian entrusts to expand concept to reality has not. When it came to delivering a sound system capable of competing with any other club system on the planet, the DJ-cum-club-operator, turned to Lindenmeyer GmbH. And for everything else, he turned to his friends at b&k Braun. This included a lighting design that incorporates GLP and G-LEC products, as well as interior and exterior design work from BBK. b&k Braun’s Marketing Manager, Oliver Braun, revealed: “I’ve
