PLASA LONDON
Now that the demolition of Earls Court is inevitable, 2011 was the penultimate year for the show at this venue. PLASA 2011 took place on 11-14 September. Speculation over PLASA’s importance within the tradeshow calendar - similarly to recent years - continued to occupy many conversations. However, the organisers added new features to this year’s line-up in order to boost the overall package. The new additions included the STLD’s LED luminaire shootout, an expanded Theatres Trust Ecovenue feature and the PLASA Production Bar. While the seminar pro- gramme was also impressive and received a triumphant number of attendees. The number of brands exhibiting at the show reached 337 and there were plenty of familiar faces - as well as some new ones - but there were also some notice- able absentees, particularly on the audio side. The reason, perhaps, is that there

are just too many tradeshows now and to participate in each and every one is near impossible. Or maybe companies are choosing to spend their money targeting roadshows and workshops? Whatever the explanation, visitor numbers remained close to last year’s figures at 12,088, which was a positive sign. The imminent move that will take place in 2013 was also a frequent topic at the show, with some even trying to guess the next location through the process of elimination. Perhaps the most obvious venues in London would be Excel or Olym- pia but the organisers may just surprise us and choose somewhere completely different. For now, we’ll have to sit tight and wait. In the meantime, let’s crack on with the round up of new products and announce- ments from this year’s show.
