UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

Company: Alderamin Group Location: Sentosa, Singapore

Ptarmigan Integration Ltd. - the Hong Kong based projects division of international lighting specialists, Alderamin Group - has been highly active in the development of the Universal Studios theme park in Resorts World, Sentosa. The park opened last year and is continuing to showcase new rides throughout 2011. In the first phase of development, Ptarmigan was appointed as turnkey lighting vendor for the ‘Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure’ ride, a new interpretation of a classic attraction from Universal Studios. Working in conjunction with US company, Lightswitch, the remit included the design, supply and commissioning of the show lighting for this entertaining (and very wet) ride. Ptarmigan also served as lighting integrator (working with Yeager Design) on ‘Lights! Camera! Action!’, a behind-the-scenes look at visual special effects in the movie business. Set in an old boathouse in New York, visitors watch how a calm day suddenly changes as a hurricane passes over and devastation ensues. Then, with a shout of ‘Cut!’, calm is restored and everything resets to normal.

GRÖNA LUND

Company: Medialon Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Gröna Lund Amusement Park, located in Stockholm in Sweden, has recently inaugurated two new amazing rides, including the Blå Tåget ride. The Blå Tåget ride already existed but has gone through a total makeover. This ride is a ghost train loaded with new chills, thrills and effects especially designed for visitors’ enjoyment. The train passes through several chambers, each filled with skeletons, scarecrows, rats, wolves, fire, lightning and ghosts. The setting inside the ride was designed by artist Magnus Sörman and the en- trance to the ride was designed by artist Joakim Hansén. For the technical making of this nerve tickling and scary adventure-ride, Kreativ Teknik was contacted by Gröna Lund. Kreativ Teknik, a Swedish-based company which mainly works with lighting, control systems and effects, selected Medialon to be part of the project. Kreativ Teknik delivered a total solution including lighting, smoke, video projectors, control system, as well as the programming of the entire ride’s special effects. One Medialon Showmaster Pro embedded show controller controls and synchro- nises the entire AV system. Medialon controls everything from light and sound to lightning, smoke-effects, movements of the animatronics and video which are continuously timed and trigged by the exact positions of the train’s chariots. Medialon Showmaster Pro controls the following equipment: 23 Advantech ADAM I/O Interface, to control the animatronics via pneumatics, a Sandbox Ether DMX Interface, two Brightsign Network Video players, two projectors, a fog screen, one smoke machine, a strobe, one gas-flame, 112 LED-fixtures, three dimmers and 21 ID-AL MP3-players.

More recently, the opening of river boat ride, ‘Madagascar: A Crate Adventure’ has proven epic in nature as well as name, with an extended development phase that resulted in a redesign of the ride and lighting. Ptarmigan (originally appointed with White Light to supply the lighting fixtures and controls) saw its role expanded to lighting integrator, overseeing the redesign of the lighting and the completion of the ride this year. As the end of 2011 approaches, Universal Studios is preparing to debut a world-first at Sentosa. ‘TRANSFORMERS - The Ride’, set to open in December, promises realistic high definition 3D media and sophisticated visual effects. Once again, Ptarmigan is at the heart of the action, responsible for the supply, installa- tion supervision and commissioning of the show lighting, which has been designed by Tim Linamen of Point of Light.

“It was surprisingly quick and easy to set the timings of the animatronics together with the effects. I really liked the system and I want to continue to work with it in my future projects,” said Marcus Persson, Project Manager and CEO at Kreativ Teknik. “We think that the project has been carried out really well and it’s been done with great interest and commitment,” declared Peter Osbeck, Ride Manager at Gröna Lund. “This is a huge project we are very proud of!” concluded Marcus Persson.
