in the smoking area together with the relevant audio. But on the dancefloor the party doesn’t stop.” To help facilitate this, Lindenmeyer GmbH has zoned the venue accordingly. In the Main Hall, the main input comes as stereo signal from a DYNACORD CMS1000 mixing console, which correlates the signal with additional signals for any live event elements, such as additional mics. The CMS1000 output goes straight into 2-channels of the DYNACORD P64, as does the monitoring input signal directly from the DJ mixing console. A PC provides commercial sounds such as advertising messages, or independent music signals for the other spaces, like N8Cafe or Wii lounge. Alternatively, a feed from the Main Hall can be directed to the different zones. The main and monitoring signals have a matrix switch between them

“It is important for the customer, but it is also

important for me - I want to see something new. If I see

the same stuff all the time I get tired.”

to switch the inputs to each other’s during a dropout - like if the main output fails from the DJ’s mixing console. Processing through the system includes delays, equalisation, filters, crossovers and limitation for the Alpha speakers. Talking about the equipment choices, Roland said: “We have lots of stuff in our portfolio. We picked the Alpha system because it made sense. We made one, or two or three possible solutions for Christian’s ideas, and chose the one that best suited the budget. He went for the biggest solution!” Codex isn’t just a great looking club, it’s a venue with a big sound for big occasions. Because of the relationships that have been outlined and Christian’s active imagination, visitors will be treated to visual changes over time. As new GLP and G-LEC products come to market, we are likely to see them being used in Codex to refresh its appeal. While human nature means that visual stimulation is constantly being sought - nobody wants to look at the same thing for too long - it could be argued that our hearing sense is much less fickle. Good sound is good sound, right? Helmut Seidl certainly thinks so: “The Alpha system is considered to be a state-of-the-art system throughout the whole world, and that’s why you won’t change the sound system every time - unlike the lighting, which is a visual thing that needs to be refreshed. If you want to have good sound, you will stick to it.” And, while Christian agrees, you sense that he isn’t completely comfortable with the concept of too much stability. “I don’t need to change the sound, and at the moment I don’t need to change the lights, but every time you want something new. I want to play, I need this, I do this for my life. It is important for the customer, but it is also important for me - I want to see something new. If I see the same stuff all the time I get tired.”
