loud, punchy monitoring system, as it really makes them feel part of the whole experience.


The rear of the Main Room houses a bar and the Sky Zone - a bal- cony area overlooking the dancefloor - eight Funktion One Resolu- tion 1.5TTs act as delay speakers to provide coverage for these two sections. The Resolution 1.5TTs are 2-way cabinets that are ideally suited to venues with low ceilings. Although the overall ceiling height at Ellui is ample, the bar area and the Sky Zone cuts this height in two, which makes the Resolution 1.5TTs perfect for this area of the club. The built-in downward angle of the Resolution 1.5TTs ensures even coverage, meaning clubbers never feel too far from the action. MC² amplifiers power the system throughout the entire venue. For the Main Room, right through to the rear bar and Sky Zone, two MC² E4-75’s, four MC² E25’s, 12 MC² E45’s and eight MC² MC1250’s are in control of the amplification. While for processing, Ellui turned to Funktion One’s XO-4A - the OEM version of the XTA DP448 - a four in, eight out audio management system.


A DiGiCo SD9 looks after audio mixing in the Main Room. The SD9 features a moving fader work surface and full colour TFT LCD touch screen, which allows Ellui DJs to mix in real time. Eddie chose the SD9 for its programming capabilities. The accompanying D-Rack means the SD9 is a complete, integrated system including mixing work surface, digital stage interface and CAT5E digital multicore. This means the DJs are able to simultaneously record 56 channels direct to their favourite multitrack software or DAW. Those tracks are then used to remix and rehearse, and when it’s time to perform, everything is recalled via the SD9’s snapshot facilities. DJs. The DiGiCo is really good because you can save the pro- gramme on the desk. What I’m trying to do is, for example, when we have a DJ playing electro house, we have a set up for electro house. When we play techno we have a set up for techno sound. The goal is to build different sets for different types of music. That’s why I chose this product. With an analogue desk you’d be there for ages.” Eddie went on to explain the music policy at Ellui: “Korean clubbers like electro house, but as the clubbing industry has only been pres- ent in Korea for 10 years, people need to be educated on clubbing music. I’m trying to introduce them to techno and tech house in the Black Zone, while commercial music plays on the main stage.” The Black Zone is adjacent to the Main Room, and is a separate area with its own PA system, and its own playlist. It can be completely closed off from the Main Room, allowing clubbers the chance to experience different music genres. If a popular DJ is playing at Ellui, then the Black Zone turns into an extension of the Main Room, pro- viding extra space for clubbers to enjoy the mainstream music. The Black Zone is equipped with four Funktion One Resolution 4E-C loudspeakers, four Funktion One F218 subwoofers, and two Funk- tion One RM15’s for DJ monitors. The audio itinerary in the Black Zone also features an APB ProRack H1020 mixer, and a Yamaha SPX2000 multi effect processor. Similar to the Main Room, MC² powers the system with an another five amplifiers from the E-Series and four MC1250’s.


Seven VIP Rooms are accessible from the Main Room or the Black Zone. Eddie said: “We designed these for private parties, each room has its own iPod docking stations so people can play their own music, whether it is R&B, classical, whatever they want.” Even if the party wants to listen to the Main Room music, this is possible, and all from the privacy of their very own VIP booth. The VIP Rooms have been fitted with Funktion One F101’s. These compact and lightweight enclosures offer exceptional clarity and imaging with a sensitivity of 101dB for 1W at one metre. Their size to sound ratio was an important factor during the selection process. Lastly, the White Zone, which is located on the upper level, adjacent to the dancefloor. The White Zone is billed as a relaxing lounge area, somewhere people can enjoy comfortable seating and the chance to catch up with friends. The audio system in indicative of that theme, as Soundus opted to install just four Resolution 1.5 cabinets in this zone. While the amplification and processing match the other areas of the club. The total amplifier count for the five areas is a stagger- ing 52. Chanwoo Kang of Sondus said: “We think the amplifiers are the most important thing in the club. Many amplifiers are needed to maintain the system.”


Eddie said of the Soundus team: “Soundus have been down about once a month since the installation to check and tweak the system, and now it’s perfect. They provide a great after service, and always give 100%.”


Unlike other club creators, Eddie knew that each element of the club was equally important, so once he’d cracked the audio design he moved onto lighting and visuals. Despite audio being Eddie’s primary vocation, he had a clear idea of what he wanted to create with light- ing and visual technology. He said: “From the beginning I was aiming big for the lighting, as it’s never been done in Korea. No other club has really had a lighting designer as such, the lighting is basically on
