076 VENUE

STADION FESTWIESE

When Stuttgart’s Mercedes-Benz Arena was redeveloped, it was done with the aim of completing its transformation from multipurpose stadium to football ground. With the athletics track and fi eld elements of the stadium removed, a new site was needed, so the local authority built Stadion Festwiese. The new venue is a simple athletics track and centre fi eld, which currently has one spectator grandstand with 300 seats. It is from here that an Electro-Voice EVA (Expandable Vertical Array) system fi res onto, and across, the playing area. At fi rst sight it looks like such an expansive space could never be effectively covered from one source, but on fi rst listen it soon becomes clear that it can. The hang of speakers includes three EVA arrays, each of which is confi gured to address a particular area of the outfi eld. All three cabinets offer 120° of horizontal dispersion, but their vertical dispersion attributes differ. The bottom two cabinets have a 20° dispersion, which is wide enough to cover the near fi eld areas - namely the track and playing area. The top box has a narrower, 9° dispersion that fi res across the playing area to the track and spectator area at the opposite side. It’s remarkable how even the coverage is from a single source confi guration. Behind the EVA array, the seating area is serviced by fi ve Electro- Voice Sx300PI 2-way speakers. A sixth Sx300PI covers the rooftop area adjacent to the stand, which can be used by disabled spectators. Power is supplied by three DYNACORD DSA 8209 amplifi ers. A DYNACORD CMS1000 mixing console stationed in the control room takes microphone and playback signals, and relays them to a DYNACORD P64 digital audio matrix manager.

There are plans for Stadion Festwiese to expand its seating area, to a size that is potentially three times its current capacity. The seating area would stretch along the length of the fi eld, which would mean an extended audio solution in the process.

SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIPS Roland and Albert are clearly happy with the relationship that Lindenmeyer GmbH has with EVI Audio. The product range allows them to approach a variety of very different projects, with confi dence that they will have a common level of quality across the brands and ranges within those brands. Though the solution for an ultra-modern nightclub like Codex is completely different than the one formulated for Stadion Festweise, there are common techniques applied to both. Lindenmeyer GmbH believes in a scientifi c approach to audio specifi cation, regardless of the project’s nature. They work out the optimum solution by applying their own expertise, using EASERA software and producing different options for the client, at different budget levels. Wherever possible, the company likes to be involved in the design process from the conceptual stage. But, frustratingly, this isn’t always the case, as Roland explained: “I think you should speak to the end users, the people who are using the stuff, before you build or plan it. In the long run, it makes things easier. But normal architectural groups just design, they aren’t concerned with planning or function. Putting the functional infrastructure in place, after the structure is built, is always diffi cult.”
