then routes the signal into the LED screens within the venue, and subsequently into people’s home via the Nico Nico Live stream. Mr Otani explained: “The Christie Spyder is used as a switcher to break up the picture to display on each wall. We can display ‘picture in picture’ of the live performance from the video tape recorder camera, or the comments on the screen using the Spyder.” The sound reinforcement system at Nicofarre was required to be high quality, but it needed to be a compact design, so not to detract from the live performance and the interactive LED screens. Mr Kong Imaoka of Audiobrains Co Ltd, which was responsible for the planning and implementation of the audio equipment said: “With the installation of the 360º LED screens, we produced the connec- tion between live performance, virtual reality and augmented reality visual effects.” With the brief set, Mr Imaoka proceeded with a d&b audiotechnik system for the main PA at Nicofarre. He said: “We provided a high quality, powerful PA, but one that did not disturb the audience’s sight lines.” The system comprised eight d&b audiotechnik T10’s for front of house, plus a further two for infills, four d&b audiotechnik Q-SUB woofers and 10 d&b audiotechnik MAX wedges. The T10’s are passive 2-way loudspeakers, which house two 6.5- inch drivers positioned in a dipolar arrangement. They also feature a 1.4-inch high frequency compression driver. At Nicofarre the cabinets have been mounted so they function as high directivity point source loudspeakers, which allows the sound to project over the entire audience. The T10’s are supplemented by the Q-SUBs, which are actively driven low compression bass-reflex loudspeakers fitted with high excursion 18-inch drivers. A total of three d&b audiotechnik D12 amplifiers and five Yamaha P7000S amplifiers power the sys- tem. Audiobrains opted to install the MAX cabinets as wedges due to their coaxial design and their ability to produce remarkable vocal presence, an important factor for Nicofarre. An Avid Venue Mix Rack System also features in the audio package. It comprises the Venue Profile console and the all-in-one Venue Mix Rack processing and I/O component. The system offers flexibility and is easy to use, making mixing simple regardless of the perfor- mance type. Mr Imaoka said he chose Avid Venue Mix Rack System in particular because of “its compact size, and the fact it’s equipped with a compressor, limiter, reverbs, delays, EQs and plug-in effects. It has flat tone, and features AES3 too.”

A brand new product from Apex Audio made its way onto the audio spec the Intelli-X² 48 digital signal processor. It features internal pro-

cessing up to 192kHz, a high-end studio-grade analogue circuit de- sign and mastering-grade compressor. Designed to be plug-and-play, the Intelli-X² is simple to configure and integrate into any network. Intelli-X² 48 provides all the system management tools necessary for comprehensive system alignment and EQ, through to the provision of IIR and FIR based crossovers. Mr Imaoka said of the new technology: “We had to consider the reflection from the LED screens. We aimed to control that and make sure the sound was in front of the listeners by using Intelli-X² as an insert device with digital connection.” To round off the install, Nicofarre also opted for some intelligent lighting fixtures. Tokyo Butai Showmei was chosen for this part of the design. Mr Aino believes he got the job because “I used my knowl- edge from having worked in the field for a long time. We’ve installed many theatres and live houses in the past and have consequently developed specialist expertises.”

Mr Aino selected Martin Professional MAC 350 Entours and MAC 301 Washes for the venue. The MAC 350 Entours offer many pos- sibilities in terms of brightness and efficiency, and the compactness of these LED fixtures was definitely a factor during the selection pro- cess, as once again sight lines were important. Another LED prod- uct, the MAC 301 Washes, are capable of producing a wide range of colours from rich saturated shades to pastels. They also feature a powerful, fast zoom with an impressive zoom range, ideal for captur- ing the moving stage performers. Mr Aino continued: “We chose lighting technology that is used in regular theatres and live house. These fixtures have reduced power consumption thanks to their LED components, and they are suitable for a variety of events.”
