When the news broke on 28 October that Luminar - the UK’s largest late night entertainment company - had gone into administration, it got me thinking about how the nightclubbing landscape has changed in recent years. Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the UK clubbing scene was at its peak, but that just isn’t the case anymore. If we look outside of the UK, the story is different. For example, the clubbing industry in Korea has only really been alive for the last 10 years, and as the market matures, nightclubs are thriving. In this issue you’ll find a review of a new venue called Ellui. With a capacity of 4,000, it is Korea’s first super club.

The USA seems to have retained a high interest in the clubbing market too, with millions of dollars still being spent on high-end nightlife projects. You only need to look at Marquee, featured in mondo*dr May / June, to see the evidence. Because Europe differs so much from one place to the next, it is difficult to read. Recently, many of our installation stories have been theatre-related, but perhaps that is as much an indication that we’ve changed. Speaking of that change, the last couple of years has seen mondo*dr expand its remit. It started its life almost 22 years ago as a nightclubbing magazine, but we now cover all aspects of the entertainment world including nightclubs, theatres, sporting stadia, retail outlets, museums, cruise ships and much more, we can report back to you the reader on any new venue, no matter what the genre. We’re even featuring a Theme Parks Report in this issue, so if you’re a thrill seeker at heart, turn to page 34 to get started. And continuing with the moving forward theme, mondo*dr is taking further steps into the digital world. You’ll notice a selection of QR codes scattered inside this issue. Scan them with your smart device, and you’ll be treated to some additional content. It may be a little early, but as this is the last regular issue of mondo*dr for 2011, I’d like to take this opportunity to say what a great year it’s been, but I can’t quite believe how quickly its past! Here’s to a prosperous 2012.
