Believe in Young People

A charity is striving to give young people the best chance of gaining a job or apprenticeship when they leave school

Starting the journey in hospitality Believe in Young People (BiYP) is a charity which takes young people through an end-to-end programme from years 7-11, and which is designed to increase their employability. Starting from Year 7 onwards, BiYP

offers young people a taste of life in the hospitality industry. By partnering with blue-chip employers like Costa, Hilton Worldwide, Premier Inn, Babylon, Jurys Inn and Mitchells & Butlers, BiYP delivers a work experience programme that not only provides them with the skills employers want, but also the behaviours they expect. And the results speak for themselves. BiYP have achieved a 32% increase in skills and behaviours progression in BiYP graduates of their integrated employability programme. In particular, 79% of students that participated in the scheme were deemed suitable for employment in the hospitality sector. The charity provides careers

information, advice and guidance via its own online platform (www.biyp.org). They aim to make young people aware of the huge range of career possibilities available to them, and organise face-to- face support in the form of employer- led visits, workshops events and work- related lessons to help in this process.

This means young people are able to gain a real insight into their career options, and make informed decisions about choosing their dream careers. “Too many young people are

still leaving our education system without the skills and behaviours that employers really want,” said Tanja Kuveljic, chief executive of BiYP. “Working in partnership with schools and hospitality firms, we bridge the gap that exists between traditional methods of education and employer expectations. Our work experience programme provides young people with real opportunities to enhance their employability and develop a set of skills and behaviours that make them truly valuable to employers.” “It is now just as important for

young people to acquire skills like communication, organisation, problem solving, career drive and teamwork as academic qualifications in maths, English and science.”

Leading the way in hospitality BiYP provides employers with an alternative method for recruiting apprentices, which can result in as much as an 80% reduction in costs for hospitality providers such as Whitbread. This represents a huge
