LICENSING 2012 GUIDE 235 All mapped out

From significant summer movie blockbusters, milestone anniversaries and new toy launches across a raft of established properties, through to major sporting events, this year is shaping up to be another busy one for the licensing business. Samantha Loveday takes you through some of the key highlights in 2012, quarter by quarter…

JANUARY TO MARCH The year kicks off with two key properties beginning 25th anniversary celebrations – Coolabi’s Purple Ronnie and Fireman Sam from Hit Entertainment. Activity and events for both will run throughout 2012. Meanwhile, as well as Fireman Sam, Hit also has a busy first quarter planned for some of its other brands. Thomas & Friends will see the full launch of pre-school products from Fisher-Price, along with the release of two DVD episodes, a microsite, Rocking the Rails pre-school pack and Story Time books, plus the opening of Thomas Land.

Character Options will also debut the new Mike the Knight line at Toy Fair and BBC Worldwide will launch its one-off magazine special. Character will also be showcasing new Bob the Builder products. The Walt Disney Company also kicks off what’s likely to be another busy year for the Princess and Cars franchises. Spring/summer will see the release of a new animated short

Mattel will be refreshing its toy line, which will include Bride Rapunzel, plus Rapunzel and Flynn fashion doll set and a mini doll wedding set. Rubies will also be rolling out new dress up. Moving on, and under the banner of The Story Begins with You, Disney will be celebrating the stories of all the Princesses, kicking off in January with Rapunzel. Others following throughout the year include Ariel in May and Cinderella in October. The company will also continue to support the Cars brand heavily throughout Q1 and beyond. Cars 2 has been Disney’s largest toy line yet, with more than 300 new toys. It has also shifted more than 200 million Cars die-cast vehicles worldwide to date. New merchandise will be backed up with the launch of fresh content such as new Cars Toon shorts which will feature as a bonus in Disney DVDs, as well as being rotated on the Disney Channel and

Disney XD and other digital platforms.
