Why Study Business in Bar and Restaurant Management? This programme will provide students with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for effective bar and restaurant management. Its fundamental aim is to meet the needs of the industry at local, regional and national level. To be a successful restaurant or bar manager you will need to have excellent organisation, problem-solving, promotion and people skills, including the ability to build strong relationships with customers and staff. Budgeting and stock-taking skills are also highly desirable.
While practical experience is vital for progression in these areas, third-level qualifications have become far more commonplace amongst employees, particularly those in management positions.
Programme Modules This award will cover a number of modules including Licensed Trade Operations, Facilities Management for the Licensed Trade, Wine Studies, Business Management and Enterprise Development in the Licensed Trade, Business and Company Law, Human Resource Management, Accounting, Information Technology and Business Mathematics, Management Information Systems and Tourism Studies.
Career Opportunities With further experience, you will be able to manage a range of Food and Beverage businesses including pubs, clubs, restaurants, hotels, leisure complexes and catering companies on location, catering for events such as conferences, weddings, sports events, concerts and movie filming. You could also work in theatre bars, holiday centres, sports clubs, airport terminals, and on ships.
Salaries:
Restaurant and bar managers can secure salaries of €25,000- €40,000, with assistant managers or supervisors offered less. Managers in the top restaurants can expect much higher levels.
Other Essential Information Work Placements • At the end of year one there is a twelve week work placement in an Irish hotel or other approved property, organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student.
• Upon completion of exams in year two students undertake a thirty week industrial placement. This placement is organised by the LINKS office in conjunction with the student. Students must complete this placement in order to progress to their final year of study.

• If students are considering an international career, the school would encourage students to study an international language during the three years of study and to complete their international placement in a location that supports the development of the language.
The School has extensive international links with hotels, tourism organisations and educational organisations. In addition, the school is an active member of various hotel school associations including the Association of European Hotel & Tourism schools (AEHT) and the Council for Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE).
Follow-on Studies
It is possible to pursue studies at Bachelor of Arts honours level in the School. Students who are successful in their final examinations will be admitted directly to the final year of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme.
