Foundation / Liberal Arts Programme (FETAC Level 5)

The Access Office and the City of Galway Vocational Education Committee (CGVEC) will be offering a pilot pre-entry training programme for adults in September 2012. This programme is designed for adults who have been away from the educational environment for a period of time or who may have left formal education without a qualification. They provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a full-time third level programme of study and, on successful completion, participants may progress onto mainstream programmes in GMIT.

There are no specific entry requirements but students must be 21 years of age or over on 1 January in the year of entry.

The International Office

GMIT is a multicultural institute with over seventy nationalities represented in the student population. The International Office is responsible for the recruitment of international students and for the provision of necessary information and support during their time in college. Our strategic objective is to provide an international dimension for our Irish students through shared learning with international students in GMIT, while providing an Irish academic and cultural education to international students.

The office is divided into two sections, EU and non-EU and may be contacted at international@gmit.ie or 091-742456 / 091-742149.

EU Applicants

Citizens of the EU are eligible for entry to GMIT programmes on the same basis as Irish citizens and apply to the CAO or directly to GMIT in the normal way (see page 11).

EU students applying to GMIT under the auspices of the Erasmus and Leonardo educational programmes, sponsored by the European Union, apply to the International Office. Erasmus permits students to study abroad in another EU college for a period of time, typically a semester or an academic year. Students obtain academic recognition via the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) for studies completed abroad and these can be used in part-fulfillment of their home college academic requirements.

GMIT has formal educational links within the Erasmus scheme with around sixty European higher education colleges and universities. A current list can be found in the international section of the GMIT website. These links enable students from GMIT and the other institutions to build a period of study abroad into their educational experience. The benefits of such an experience, which is highly valued by employers, include building competence in a foreign language, developing self-reliance and learning to understand other cultures.

The International Office in GMIT and our international partners manage the exchanges which are formalised for each student in a ‘learning agreement’, which is agreed prior to travel.

The Leonardo programme fosters co-operation between education and industry and facilitates placing students on work experience to meet part of their programme requirements.

Non EU Applicants

GMIT welcomes applications from outside the EU and the International Office administers the application process for all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
