Special Sports and Cultural Achievement (SSCA) Scheme


The GMIT SSCA Scheme is a special entry scheme targeted at outstanding sportspersons and those who have made a significant contribution to cultural activities. Ten additional places will be reserved for candidates who are committed to further developing their sporting, cultural and academic careers. A maximum of two places will be available on any GMIT full-time programme with the exception of the following programmes:


GA785 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science


GA880 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in General Nursing


GA882 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychiatric Nursing


GA980 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Design & Technology Education


Eligibility Candidates will be required to fulfil the following criteria:


• Satisfy the GMIT minimum entry requirements (general entry requirements and specific programme entry requirements) for the programme(s) to which they are applying.


• Demonstrate evidence of sporting or cultural achievements (candidates will be assessed on sporting/cultural achievement and academic performance).


Application Procedure


• Apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) in the normal manner.


• Download a separate ‘SSCA Scheme Application Form’ from the GMIT website (available on date of publication of ‘CAO First Round Offers’).


• Complete the SSCA Application Form and return it within 10 days of the publication of ‘CAO First Round Offers’ to: Dr. Carina Ginty Schools Liaison Office, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Dublin Road, Galway.


• Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend for interview at GMIT.


Academic Scholarships


GMIT sponsors nine academic scholarships. There is one scholarship in each of the Schools of Business, Engineering, Hotel, Humanities (excluding Art & Design) and Science on the Dublin Road, Galway campus, one in the Department of Art & Design at Cluain Mhuire and one each at the Castlebar and Letterfrack campuses. These scholarships are based on the highest Leaving Certificate points in each school/campus.


There is one scholarship for a first year mature student. Those interested are invited to apply in writing (once registered) during the first semester to their school/campus.
