GALWAY-MAYO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Student Services
This is a new, exciting and challenging time for students and with this in mind the Student Services team aim to provide a range of services to help and support students whilst at the Institute.
Student Health Unit
The Student Health Unit caters for the health needs of all students and provides emergency first-aid cover for the Institute. Opening hours on the Dublin Road campus, Galway are: Monday to Thursday 9.00 am to 6.00pm and Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm. The unit is staffed at all times by a nurse and local doctors attend the unit every morning five days a week, providing a comprehensive GP service. At both the Castlebar and Letterfrack campuses, students attend a local General Practitioner nominated by the Institute. The Student Health Unit provides a quality care service and has a preventative role with emphasis on health promotion.
Counselling
The Counselling Service offers confidential counselling and therapy at each of four campuses - Dublin Road, Cluain Mhuire, Letterfrack and Castlebar. The service is free and the counsellors offer both crisis support and longer term therapy. Issues brought to the counsellors include academic concerns, personal or social issues, mental health issues as well as welfare concerns.
Careers Service
A full-time Careers Service is available within the Institute. The Careers Service helps students to make informed decisions and identify occupations that would suit their interests, personality, skills and degree qualification.
The following areas are of particular interest to students and graduates:
• Advice on progression • Company presentations and job vacancy notifications • Careers Fairs • Interview skills, cover letter and CV preparation
Chaplaincy
The Chaplaincy provides pastoral care and spiritual support for students of any faith or religion and works to further develop the community at the Institute. Furthermore, the Chaplain offers support in times of crisis. A chaplain is available in the Galway and Castlebar campuses. The Chaplain also provides a regular service to students in the Letterfrack and Cluain Mhuire campuses.
Student Support / Assistance Funds
Students experiencing financial hardship may apply to the Student Support Fund for help. Loans or grants from this fund are available to students after a confidential interview. The Student Assistance Fund is also available for qualifying students. The Student Assistance Fund is intended to tackle disadvantage by providing financial support to disadvantaged students who require additional financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their third-level studies. It is financed by the Irish Government and part funded by the European Social Fund under the Human Capital Investment Operational Programme 2007-2013.
Applications for both funds are available from the Student Services Administration Office.
